The BSc (Hons) Communications Management degree is a Work Based Distance Learning (WBDL) degree and aims to break down the barriers between learning at work and learning at university. The programme takes into account the high levels of skills and learning that are demonstrated every day in the workplace and provides a degree framework to support and accredit this learning.
The University of Lincoln acknowledge the high standard of professional training already received by RSignals Officers at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and by Yeoman of Signals and Yeoman (EW) during the British Army Command and Leadership programme. Consequently, the University has recognised this training through students’ formal completion of the first two levels of study of the undergraduate degree programme and also, through an agreement with the Royal School of Signals (RSS), the accreditation of five Level 6 Modules. This leaves successful graduates of the RSS officer and Yeoman courses who have completed their military training within the 5 years prior to enrolment on the degree programme, needing to successfully complete a further three final level modules in order to be awarded the BSc (Hons) Communications Management degree. Students will complete the Study Skills for Distance Learning, Management of Change and Situational Exercises and Management Studies modules as described under the modules tab.
Applicants should have a first degree or relevant Level 5 qualification such as a Foundation Degree, HND, CMI Level 5 or similar obtained within the 5 years prior to enrolment.
Individuals who have completed phase two training prior to 5 years before enrolment will not be eligible for this programme.

Some courses provide opportunities for you to undertake field work or field trips. Where these are compulsory, the cost for the travel, accommodation and your meals may be covered by the University and so is included in your fee. With regards to text books, the University provides students who enrol with a comprehensive reading list and you will find that our extensive library holds either material or virtual versions of the core texts that you are required to read. As technologies advance and equipment becomes more complex, personnel must be prepared to address the managerial challenges that modern military technology present. Effective communications are at the heart of any successful military force and reliable communication links play a vital role in the success of associated operations. Moreover, information systems are a vital asset in ensuring that up-to-the-minute information is always available to military decision makers. The speed of technological advance within communications and information technology calls for a support chain that is highly skilled and motivated. The University of Lincoln acknowledge that these requirements call for a high level of managerial underpinning and an associated level of academic expertise. Hence, the BSc (Hons) Communications Management degree is a final year 'top-up' course which presents graduates of Royal Corps of Signals (RSignals) Troop Commanders’, Yeoman (EW) and Yeoman of Signals courses with an opportunity to enhance their managerial and academic skills within their area of operational expertise. The programme is open to all suitably qualified candidates and offers an opportunity to transfer academic qualifications and work experience to achieve a degree in Communications Management.
Flexibility is a key feature of this programme and University of Lincoln regulations permit military students to formally interrupt their studies, at no extra cost for a period of up to 24 months in light of Out of Area or other such commitments. In effect students can pause their studies until they are in a position to continue.
Students can have up to ten hours contact time with their tutors with the remainder being self-directed study. A range of teaching and learning methods are used on the BSc (Hons) Communications Management including using Blackboard which is an online teaching and learning resource. Teaching on the course is through a range of methods such as podcasts, wikis and blogs with the aim to facilitate a community of practice learners. Blackboard is also used for assessment purposes.
The course and associated assessments are at final year degree level hence, applicants should be prepared to offer the commitment and dedication to produce work of an appropriate standard. Throughout the programme assessment methods are designed to enable you to develop your potential and are based on the development of close working relationships between tutor and individual student. Assessment strategies will reflect the focus of the course on independent self-managed learning. Feedback on assessments should be within three to five working days for formative assessments and fifteen working days for summative assessments.
Typically, students are expected to take 18 to 48 months to complete the programme which includes the DCTT elements, but this will vary according to each individual's personal circumstances and work commitments.

Study Skills for Distance Learners
This Study Skills for Distance Learners module aims to provide students with a structured framework within which to develop the essential skills for distance learning. The module encourages you to take personal control of your learning and to balance the freedoms and disciplines inherent in a distance learning environment. Using models of theory and practice embellished by your personal experience, you can develop your ability to self-motivate, manage your own studies and reflect on how you learn. You have the opportunity to evaluate theories and practical models to challenge and to expand on received wisdoms to support both your academic and practical development.
Management of Change
This module aims to enable you to develop your workplace skills in the management of change by investigating your own organisation in relation to change management from a number of perspectives. You will have the opportunity to consider your organisation’s business and market position— how it is structured and how it operates—to understand the context within which change happens. In addition, you can consider how organisational structure and culture may support or inhibit change as well as evaluating management of change theoretical models. This module enables you to explore the impact of change on people and the skills needed by effective change agents and organisations.
Upon completion of the module, you can use your learning to inform a study of change management in your organisation and to make recommendations about change strategies for the future.
Situational Exercises and Management Studies
This module introduces the student to the study of the discipline of Management. Students focus on the development of management, the principles of management, and the roles of managers. The application and importance of management issues within organisations are also considered. From formal definitions of management, identification of management resources and role analysis, students can further examine elements of management pertinent to human interaction. Final consideration is given to the effects of human factors with particular reference to their influence in the maintenance of military engineering resources.
To aid in the development and evaluation of these concepts, extensive use is made of highly realistic role-play activities extending over many weeks. These activities both group and individually, provide an environment within which the students can select, manage and evaluate the skills and knowledge they have acquired throughout the course.
