Helping Elderly People Stay Independent for Longer

Postgraduate and PhD researchers at Lincoln are part of a major international robotics project – ENRICHME – which aims to help elderly people stay independent for longer. The team at Lincoln is part of a large European consortium developing humanoid service robots that could be deployed in care homes and ‘extra-care’ housing’ to support carers and residents by helping with tasks such as locating lost objects, facilitating video calls with family and friends, issuing medication reminders, encouraging activities such as physical exercises and mental puzzles.

Students undertaking research degrees normally register for an MPhil (Master of Philosophy) with registration transferred to a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) after a year if appropriate progress is being made. The Masters by Research is a flexible programme of formal research training for recent graduates, lecturers or practitioners whose work requires application of specialist research skills. The Masters by Research may also act as the preliminary stage for the completion of an MPhil or PhD.

The Doctoral School at the University of Lincoln provides a highly collegiate setting where our postgraduates can enjoy support for their research studies, as well as acclimatise and integrate into academic life. The Doctoral School offers education and training courses for both students and academic colleagues, monitors student satisfaction, hosts networking and social events, and organises an annual Postgraduate Student Conference. Our aim is to fully engage the postgraduate community and support and enhance the student journey.

Funding Your Research

In addition to our significant physical resources and facilities, the University delivers a range of annual investments in research at both College and University levels.

A University-wide Research Investment Fund assists with the development of strategic research opportunities, nurturing and promoting the creation of new knowledge that is of benefit to the wider community – regionally, nationally and internationally. Alongside this, College research funding supports smaller-scale activities that contribute to high-quality research outputs.
