Two Fashion Studies graduates from the University of Lincoln’s School of Art and Design are fulfilling a life-long ambition by setting up their millinery business called ‘The Artisan Design Studio’.

Angela Coupe and Carol Robinson who graduated with BA (Hons) in Fashion Studies from the university are opening a design studio and craft workshop in St John’s Craft Units on the site of the former St John’s Hospital in Bracebridge Heath.

Angela, who graduated in 2004 and Carol, who graduated last year have already been recognised for their work having reached the semi-finals of this year’s Hat Designer of the Year 2006, the international Hat Magazine competition.

In March the friends and now business partners were just two of around 60 designers from the UK and abroad selected to show their work on the catwalks of the Swatch Alternative Fashion Week in London.

They’re now planning to expand their own label ‘Hats on Heads’ and start running craft workshops in millinery, sewing and dress making.

Although Angela only graduated two years ago, she says it is something she has always wanted to do: “Working in the fashion industry has been my dream since about the age of 16. Both Carol and I sat our City & Guilds exams when we left school and I did a BTEC in fashion but life got in the way and we never got any further with it.

“When my children left home I decided to go back to university and finally realise my ambition. It’s taken me a while to do it but I’m so glad that I’m finally doing what I’ve always wanted to do.”

There will be an invitation-only open evening at ‘The Artisan Design Studio’, Unit 4, St John’s Hospital Craft Units, Caistor Drive, Bracebridge Heath on Friday 7th July followed by an open day on Saturday 8th July for members of the public.
