A meat processing student from near Boston spent the day in the grand surroundings of the Worshipful Company of Butchers in London yesterday.

Stephan Brown (42) from Kirton Meeres was at Butchers’ Hall to receive the RAPS (UK) Ltd Award for the adjusted best student in meat and poultry.

Stephan, who works at Geo Adams in Spalding and has achieved NVQ level two at the University of Lincoln’s Holbeach campus, received an engraved plaque, a year’s free associate membership to the Worshipful Company of Butchers’ Guild and £150.

The ceremony was led by the Master of the Worshipful Company of Butchers, G John Edkins.

“The effects of this award are already apparent at Geo Adams,” said Sharon Dunn, subject leader for manufacturing at the Holbeach campus.

“Stephan was one of only two students who researched and provided an assignment and now, because of his efforts, all nine current NVQ candidates are doing work outside of their designated NVQ time to try to emulate what Stephan has achieved.

“The award also helps us to promote the 14 to 19 curriculum locally to engage a desperately needed younger workforce.

“It was an honour to attend the ceremony and a privilege to mingle and be warmly welcomed by an industry that cares so much for its training,” added Sharon.

Gerald Bailey, training officer and NVQ assessor from Geo Adams, also attended the ceremony and commented: “We were very pleased, and pleased for the university, because without the university’s commitment we wouldn’t have got the NVQs. Stephan’s success has encouraged a lot more people to join the NVQ programme this year.”

The award was given jointly by the Worshipful Company of Butchers and the Meat Training Council and presented by Roy Seeman from sponsors RAPS (UK) Ltd.
