UNIVERSITY FOOTBALLERS KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE

The University of Lincoln’s 1st XI football team have booked their place in the first round of a national competition which could see them playing at Sheffield United’s home ground, Bramall Lane.

They’re among 16 teams from universities across the UK who will be battling it out for a place in the finals of the Championship Cup.

The team made it through to the cup stages last year but were knocked out in the first round by Loughborough who went on to win the competition.

This year the team are more confident of going through to the second round because the draw is more in their favour.

Midfielder David Reid explained: “We’re feeling much more confident this time round as our first match is against Southampton University who ended up fifth in the Southern Premier League whereas we came 3rd in the Northern League.

“If we beat Southampton we’ll then have to play either Swansea or Warwick who we also stand a good chance of overcoming given our recent form.

“In October we beat last year’s cup winners Loughborough at home. It was the first time in three years that they’d been beaten at home which bodes well for this competition.

“For the past three years we’ve continued to improve and the team is the strongest it’s ever been. There’s a really good team spirit and we’re feeling really confident of getting through to final. We’re hoping lots of people we come and support us on Wednesday and really get behind the team.”

The university’s 1st XI are playing Southampton University’s 1st XI side on Wednesday 1st March at 2pm at the Ruston Marconi Sports Ground on Newark Road.
