DISABLED STUDENT TO COLLECT MASTERS DEGREE

A partially sighted mature student at the University of Lincoln will collect his Master of Science degree certificate tomorrow (Wednesday) in a special ceremony at Lincoln Cathedral.

Peter Thomas (30) from Grimsby completed a three-year part-time Masters degree course in Human Resource Management (HRM) at the university, after becoming partially sighted due to diabetes. He had previously achieved a degree in Hospitality Management at Sheffield Hallam University.

Peter worked as food and beverage manager for both the Forte and Regal hotel chains until the disability obstructed his role and he was forced to consider an alternative career.

Peter completed part of his study at Lincoln College which works in partnership with the university, and then completed the rest of the course at the university’s Brayford Pool campus.

His course was supported by his local Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) which provided assistance and support including a bursary towards his tuition fees. They also provided Peter with computer facilities to ease any difficulties he may have had with completing written examinations.

The difficulty of the Masters degree was made even more demanding as Peter also moved house to Grimsby from neighbouring Caistor and got married. He also celebrated the birth of his daughter.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the course at Lincoln and I am very thankful to the CIPD who were very helpful and supportive of my studies,” he said.

“Peter is a very cheerful and positive individual,” said HRM course leader Jennifer Johnson who also supervised Peter’s dissertation. “This is obviously a great and well deserved achievement for him.”

Since completing his course, Peter has been assigned a temporary position as Personnel Officer at North East Lincolnshire Council. He will collect his degree at Lincoln Cathedral at 11.30am on Wednesday 26th January.
