LEADERSHIP COURSE FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are to learn management skills at the University of Lincoln.

The university’s Faculty of Business and Law has won a bid to provide a clinical leadership course for the NHS in Lincolnshire.

Frontline healthcare staff from ambulance trusts, acute trusts, primary care trusts and social services will study part-time at the university for a year to acquire management skills.

Forty students are expected to enrol on the first course, which will begin this September. The aim is to teach the students about all aspects of clinical leadership and give them the skills to manage their own services.

“The people who will be coming on the programme will be the frontline staff themselves – GPs, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists –

as opposed to managers,” said Christine Abbott, a lecturer in Management and Leadership at the university.

“This course is about giving people on the ground the skills to effect changes and improve services.”

Derek Bray, Chair of the NHS Lincolnshire Transformation Programme, added: “The NHS locally is making a significant investment in leadership training as a key feature for managing change and improving services to patients.”

Dr Don White, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law at the university, commented: “We are delighted to be the provider for this exciting development. It is further evidence of our growing partnership with the NHS in Lincolnshire.”

After a year’s study the NHS staff on the course will have earned a postgraduate certificate in Management.

The new course has been developed for clients including  the East Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust , the Lincolnshire South West Teaching Primary Care Trust ,  the West Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust, the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Lincolnshire Social Services, the Lincolnshire Healthcare NHS Trust and the Lincolnshire Ambulance and Health Transport Service NHS Trust.
