Lincoln photography students snapped up first and second prize at the Virgin Megastores Nationwide University Photographic Competition last night (Wednesday).

Emma Thomas and Micky Watt, who are studying for a National Diploma in Photography at the Lincoln School of Art & Design, won £2,500 and £2,000 and will get to see large prints of their work on display at the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street.

Over 300 photography students from all over the UK entered the competition. The Lincoln duo were named as the winners from a shortlist of 30 who attended the awards ceremony at the Truman Brewery in London.

Emma and Micky were asked to create a visually compelling photographic image to reflect Virgin Megastores’ advertising strapline ‘Whatever Turns You On’. Emma’s winning image depicted a naked man with a guitar and a cow standing in a field.

Their photographs will be developed into style ads as well as being displayed in the Oxford Street Megastore.

“I still can’t believe I’ve won – it hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Emma (17) of Holdingham, near Sleaford, who is aiming for a career as a photographer or animator. “A couple of the judges said they liked my image because it was vibrant, colourful and eye-catching.”

Keith James, programme leader for the National Diploma in Photography, attended the ceremony with the students and their parents.

“We’re all over the moon,” he said. “It was a fantastic evening and it was really good to meet some very influential people in the art and design business.

“We’re very proud of the students and pleased with the awards as they will give us a much higher profile both regionally and nationally.

“The majority of the students shortlisted were on higher education courses and ours is a further education course, so Emma and Micky did extremely well.”
