Lincoln MP Gillian Merron will support the region’s future young footballers this Friday at a Grass Roots coaching session at the University of Lincoln.

The coaching sessions have been running at the university’s sports centre every Friday during school term time since March this year.

Grass Roots is a football coaching scheme aimed at children of all abilities from the ages of 5 to 11 years, to improve their individual skills.

“The scheme was set up initially to take football coaching into rural Lincolnshire,” said Richard Cooper, Grass Roots development officer at Lincoln City Football Club. “But since then demand has grown in the city of Lincoln too.

“Lincoln doesn’t have a wealth of sports facilities so the university gave us an ideal venue – their sports centre is first-class.”

Sports centre duty manager Helen Evans added: “We are delighted that Grassroots approached us. It’s a worthwhile scheme which encourages young people to get into sport.”

Photographers are welcome to come along to the sports centre from 5:30pm to 6:15pm on Friday.
