A student from the Hull School of Architecture has won a national designer of the year award – the second year running that the school has scooped the top prize.
Jamie Hickson (23) has been named Young Designer of the Year at TiLE (Trends in Leisure and Entertainment), the country’s leading forum for those in the leisure, museum and exhibition industry.
Jamie, who lives in Glasgow, graduated this summer with a degree in Museum and Exhibition Design from the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.
He and fellow student Daniel McCabe were nominated for the award by their lecturers, and while Jamie won the top prize Daniel was the only entrant to be highly commended.
Their achievement was particularly remarkable since, owing to an administrative mix-up, they had only ten days rather than six weeks to prepare their submission.
"We had to get our work finished in double quick time,” said Jamie. “After a few late nights we delivered the work to the conference by motorcycle courier, and we just made it by the skin of our teeth.”
Jamie’s winning submission, entitled ‘Elevations – The Story of a Skyscraper’, was a walk-through visitor experience about skyscrapers as icons in modern society.
The Young Designer of the Year award will raise Jamie’s profile as he looks for a full-time job in the exhibition design industry. “It’s has given me a lot more opportunities through the people I’ve met and the advice I was given at the conference. I should have a real headstart now in looking for a job.”
Richard McConnell, senior lecturer in Museum and Exhibition Design, was delighted by Jamie’s success. “This award is made by the TiLE organisers each year to encourage good standards in exhibition design, particularly among students,” he said. “This is the second time we have entered it, and I am delighted to say that our students have been successful on both occasions!”
