Children in Hull will watch their parents receive ‘Learning to Learn’ certificates at a mini awards ceremony at the university tomorrow Tuesday 17th July.

Fifty-six parents on the award-winning Parents and Children Working Together Project have each completed six-week computer-based ‘Learning to Learn’ courses at Fifth Avenue Primary School, Endike Primary School, Estcourt Primary School and the Dales Primary School in the Bransholme area of Hull.

The project, which aims to attract parents back into education and provide positive educational role models for Hull children, has been co-ordinated by the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside’s Department of Social Science and Social Work.

It was awarded the New Learning Opportunities 2000 Certificate as well as being shortlisted for a Hull CityVision regeneration award.

Project Officer Kay Jarvis commented: “The ceremony is an important part of the project as the parents are able to value what they’ve achieved – and, more importantly, so do the children.

“The group of parents includes mothers, fathers and even grandparents. Being involved has improved their confidence which will enable them to help their children learn.”

A CD-ROM which highlights the work of the project has been designed by ULH Media Technology students and is being showcased in Ireland from 5th to 8th July to partners of the Leonardo Da Vinci project.

The European Union project aims to improve social inclusion and supports the needs of young people across Europe. Partners include teams from Porto in Portugal, Gallway in Ireland and Hull and involves the Young Persons Support Unit.

The parents will be awarded their certificate by Pro Vice Chancellor Derek Crothall in the Kingston Suite at the university’s Cottingham Road campus at 7pm on Tuesday 17th July.
