LONG-SERVING CHANCELLOR STANDS DOWN

The Chancellor of the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside has stood down after a quarter of a century at the helm of the institution.

Dr J H ‘Harry’ Hooper, CBE was first appointed chairman of the board of governors of Hull College of Higher Education in 1976 and has overseen the development of the institution through many guises to its present-day status as a university.

Dr Hooper enjoyed a distinguished career in industry: he held senior management positions with the Ford Motor Company, was director of the Perkins Diesel Group and was chairman and managing director of Armstrong Equipment Plc.

He was formerly chairman of the East Yorkshire Health Authority, president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, chairman of the Industry Development Board for Yorkshire and Humberside, chairman of the Yorkshire and Humberside CBE Council and chairman of the Council for the Production Engineering Research Association.

In 1981 he was awarded a CBE for his services to industry. Although he stood down as chairman of the university’s governors in 1998 he continued to serve as Chancellor until 31st July 2000.

“Dr Hooper has presided with skill and diplomacy over the management of strategic, structural and functional changes at the university,” commented the chairman of the board of governors, Christopher Oughtred.

“Through his enthusiasm, wise counsel and meticulous application, Dr Hooper has made an outstanding contribution both to this university and to higher education.”

The university expects to announce the appointment of a new Chancellor soon. The university has created a new post of Pro Chancellor and has elected Nevile Camamile, formerly senior partner at accountants Streets & Co in Lincoln, as its first incumbent.

Note to reporters: the Chancellor is nominally the head of a university, while the Vice Chancellor is the chief executive officer. Pro Vice Chancellors are senior managers reporting to the Vice Chancellor (ULH has two). The Pro Chancellor deputises for the Chancellor where appropriate.
