Two students from Colchester will kill two birds with one stone when they trek across the Andes in November.

Rob Coley and Mike Strange will be taking The Andes Challenge to raise money for the charity Action on Disability and Development. And while en route they will shoot a 30-minute film as their third-year Media Production project at the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.

The pair have to raise £2,000 each before they can take part in the ten-day event which will take them across 90km of Patagonian mountain terrain from Argentina into Chile.

“It will be a big challenge for all of us,” said Rob (20), of Colchester Road, Manningtree. “We want to look at the difference in culture and how a group of office workers from Great Britain are going to cope in an alien environment.”

“Our thirty-minute film is going to be a cross between ‘Castaway 2000’ and Michael Palin’s ‘Full Circle’,” he added. “We’re going to film the whole trek, from Lake Gutierrez in Argentina to Lago Todos Los Santos in Chile.”

Mike (20), of Westlake Crescent, Wivenhoe, already has a similar experience under his belt - he spent two weeks walking in Ecuador in 1997. “I’m looking forward to meeting different people and seeing a lot of wildlife, including elephant seals, penguins and condors,” he said.

Rob and Mike are now planning a variety of fund-raising events but are keen to hear from anyone who would like to sponsor them. “We will need quite a lot of outdoor equipment as well as £330 worth of mini DV tapes to shoot the film.”

Action on Disability and Development works with groups run by disabled people in 12 countries in Asia and Africa. ADD helps disabled people’s groups by building up their confidence, helping them to claim a place in society, providing business training, accessing small business start-up loans, providing mobility aids and campaigning for equal rights for disabled people.
