The Lincoln women’s badminton team at the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside has excelled in its first season, reaching the cup semi-final and finishing third in their league.

Still breathless, captain Lee Truong explained: “When I mentioned to the Student’s Athletic Union that I played, they suggested setting up the society. They already had some names, but no formal contact had been made between people.

“I didn’t realise how big it would become until the official fixture list came through!” she added. “The first week was chaos - we didn’t have a fully fledged team, let alone a club.  But through housemates and by chance we managed to build the team up to six players.”

Beating the university’s own Hull campus 8-1 was a great start. The team went on to play games against Ripon and York St John, Leeds, Sunderland and other universities and teacher training colleges. Their 5-4 defeat to the teachers of Crewe and Alsager in the semi-final of the BUSA Plate Competition was disappointing, but the Lincoln women finished third in their league and were all excellent friends by the end of a highly competitive year.

Beating Hull University on the way to their semi-final was particularly sweet and an indication of the competitive edge alive and well at the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.
