A unique course for marketers and managers is fast becoming a recognised institution in the arts and theatre world.


‘Walking the Tightrope’ is a programme run by a consortium including the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside on behalf of the Theatre Management Association. The course aims to ease the difficult transition from arts marketing to arts and theatre management.


This national programme is part-funded by the Arts Council of England and the Regional Arts Boards, and the latest five-day session took place in Piercebridge, near Darlington, last week (17th to 22nd January).


“This is the third time we’ve run the course, and each time the number of participants has increased,” said Brian Milsom of the university’s Faculty of Business and Management. “ ‘Walking the Tightrope’ has now become institutionalised as one of the significant management development programmes in the arts world.”


Marketers and managers from some of the biggest names in the theatre and performing arts have taken advantage of the course, including staff from the Barbican Centre in London, the West Yorkshire Playhouse and the Welsh National Opera.


The programme has been so successful that the university is now discussing with the Theatre Management Association plans to integrate the module into a specialised accredited postgraduate certificate in management for the arts world.
