Two German students have had a taste of working life in the UK thanks to the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.

Aleks Makala (23) and Kim Harder (21) will fly home before Christmas having spent one month studying and two months working in Lincoln. Kim has been busy at the Tourist Information Centre in uphill Lincoln while Aleks has been working as an administrative assistant at the university’s Brayford Pool campus.

“I haven’t focused on tourism before but I’ve really enjoyed the work,” said Kim. “In the first one or two weeks I couldn’t answer too many of the questions that I was asked, but my colleagues were really helpful!”

Aleks has been working at the university’s Community Operational Research Unit, answering correspondence, arranging meetings and organising the office after its move from Sheffield in September.

Both attended the European Academy in Hanover before arriving in Lincoln in September to study for a month at the Lincoln School of Management.

The aim of the three-month stay abroad is partly to improve students’ language skills, but chiefly to give them experience of living and working abroad.

“Lincoln is a nice little city,” said Aleks. “It’s a very good place to study because the university is so good and there’s the opportunity to follow other interests outside the university.”
