Course Overview

Explore the fundamentals of film-making from screenwriting through to post-production and delivery, with a degree designed to develop the next generation of innovative filmmakers. Film Production at Lincoln is taught by award-winning industry practitioners and research-active academics.

The degree offers students the opportunity to gain extensive experience in all areas of the film production process, working with contemporary industry-standard facilities, equipment, and software. Students can apply for paid work experience with external clients to develop their CV and showreel, and may have the opportunity to learn on professional film sets with industry-active staff.

Facilities include industry-specification cameras such as the Arri Alexa; prime lenses; video editing suites with Avid Media Composer, Da Vinci Resolve and Adobe Creative Cloud; audio editing suites with ProTools and Adobe software; digital imaging, design and multi-media suites; a sound dubbing theatre with foley room, a high-end post-production finishing suite, and two fully equipped studios.

How You Study

In your first year, you can start building and developing skills such as directing, producing, screenwriting, cinematography, sound recording, and editing. You can also undertake projects which enable you explore filmmaking in a variety of genres, while developing an understanding of film theory.

In the second year, you can begin to forge your own path through the subject and explore creative are in more depth through specialist workshops and a range of filmmaking projects. A variety of optional theory modules are available to enable you to develop a critical understanding and engage in analytical thinking. These skills are designed to prepare you for major projects in your third year. Previous projects have included factual film making, fiction film making, crew rolls on academics' film projects, or supporting on research projects.

There is a high level of group work in across the course with opportunities to collaboratively create films. There is also a focus on building your employability, and an industry placement module is available in the second year. As part of this focus on employability, you can gain exposure to professional settings and projects through field trips. Previous trips have included Aesthetica Film Festival, Indie Lincs International Film Festival, and Pinewood Studios.

Teaching across the course is delivered by industry-active professionals, including Dr Mikey Murray, a BAFTA award winning screenwriter and director, specialist factual filmmaker Rachel Scarrott, who has produced content for all of the key terrestrial UK TV channels, or Chris Greybe a post-production specialist and illustrator who has worked for the likes of the BBC and Disney.

Contact time with tutors can be in workshops, practical sessions, seminars, or lectures and may vary from module to module and from academic year to year. Tutorial sessions and project supervision can take the form of one-to-one engagement or small group sessions, or entire cohort lectures. Some modules offer the opportunity to take part in external visits, fieldwork, or self-acquired industry placements.

Module Overview

The Industry Placement Year is an exciting opportunity for students to take a year out of formal study to gain real-world experience in the creative industries. Whether you’re looking to build industry connections, develop professional skills, or explore career options, this year will give you a full-time, hands-on experience within an arts, cultural, or creative organisation.

This year is a collaborative experience between you, your employer, and the University—ensuring that you get the most out of your time in a professional setting.

Get Sustainability Certified

At Lincoln we are passionate about sustainability, and that's why we offer out Film Production students the opportunity to work towards the BAFTA albert. This is a certification on sustainability in film and TV that you can work towards as part of a module in your first year at no extra cost.

Enhance your camera skills and boost your employability by undertaking our accredited training in ARRI camera systems and gain an ARRI Academy Certificate.

How you are assessed

The way students are assessed on this course may vary for each module. Examples of assessment methods that are used include coursework, such as written assignments, reports or dissertations; and practical elements, such as presentations, video essays or filmmaking outputs. The weighting given to each assessment method may vary across each academic year. There are no exams on BA (Hons) Film Production and we aim to ensure that staff return in-course assessments to students promptly.

Degree Show at the Everyman Cinema

Our students proudly showcase their graduation projects where they truly belong, on the big screen at the Everyman Cinema, Lincoln. This event celebrates their remarkable journey, bringing together staff, students, friends, and family to honour the successes and achievements of the past three years. We also host our annual industry awards presentation and Arri Certification awards during the event. This is the celebration and send-off our students have earned.

Alongside the variety of options on the course, which enable you to discover which industry roles suit you best, Lincoln as a city has opportunities for media-based work experience.

Work Placements and Industry Links

There is an opportunity for students to take an industry placement module during the second year of their studies. Placements can be wide and varied and should be secured by the students themselves, although support from staff is available. Placements on the course are optional and may incur additional costs to participating students. 

We have also built links with location matching service, LocationLincs, and production company, Keal Productions. This relationship has led to students gaining valuable internships and in some cases even full-time employment.

Through our links to the British Film Institute, we also run a BFI Film Academy Specialist Course in cinematography. Although this is not available to degree students, it highlights the high regard in which the BFI hold the University of Lincoln.

What Can I Do with a Film Production Degree?

This course prepares students for exciting and diverse careers such as working in production companies and creative media start-up businesses, or as freelance craft specialists. Previous graduates have gone on to work as production secretaries or runners on programmes such as Britain's Got Talent, gained employment in post-production houses including Envy Post-production, Bumblebee Post-Production, Zinc Media, and Studio Lambert, or moved into roles in marketing or set design.

Some may choose to continue their studies at postgraduate level or take a qualification in teaching.

Graduates and alumni have also gained numerous successes in film festivals, Royal Television Society (RTS) awards, and award schemes.

Entry Requirements 2026-27

United Kingdom

104 to 112 UCAS Tariff points.

This must be achieved from a minimum of 2 A Levels or equivalent Level 3 qualifications. For example:

A Level: BCC to BBC

BTEC Extended Diploma: Distinction Merit Merit

T Level: Merit Overall

Access to Higher Education Diploma: 104 to 112 UCAS points to be achieved from 45 Level 3 credits.

International Baccalaureate: 28 points overall.

GCSE's: Minimum of three at grade 4 or above, which must include English . Equivalent Level 2 qualifications may be considered.

The University accepts a wide range of qualifications as the basis for entry and do accept a combination of qualifications which may include A Levels, BTECs, Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

We may also consider applicants with extensive and relevant work experience and will give special individual consideration to those who do not meet the standard entry qualifications.

Course Fees

For eligible undergraduate students going to university for the first time, scholarships and bursaries are available to help cover costs. To help support students from outside of the UK, we are also delighted to offer a number of international scholarships which range from £1,000 up to the value of 50 per cent of tuition fees. Course-Specific Additional Costs

Additional cost to students are likely during the creation of their film production projects, and may also apply during the optional study abroad or work placement pathways.

Tuition fees for the USA study abroad exchange opportunity are included in the course but travel, accommodation, and general living costs are the responsibility of the student.
