Advice for Parents
There are a number of factors to consider, such as courses available, standard of teaching, accommodation and where the university is located. One of the best ways to help your child make their decision is to attend Open Days, where there is the opportunity to meet current students and academics, and learn more about courses and campus life.
Encourage your child to think about what career they would like. They may not have a definitive career plan in mind (a lot of prospective students don’t), so encourage them to identify the skills and subjects in which they have a particular interest.
We do recommend that you attend Open Days with your child. There can be a lot to take in on the day, so it is best to have someone there to talk everything through with afterwards. We aim to make the day as enjoyable as possible for you too, with a free tea or coffee, talks specifically for parents, and the chance to look round the city.
Applications are made through UCAS. Encourage your child to check on the progress of their application online via UCAS Track, as there may be actions they need to take or offers to respond to. Find out more about the application cycle.

As Lincoln is a small city, your child will find everything they need within a short walk from the campus, so a car is not necessary.
It can take time to adjust to your child being away at university and it is normal to worry. Try to strike a balance between letting them know they have your support while allowing them to enjoy their experience of independent living.

Most universities run a programme of events for new students during their first weeks on campus. These are designed to help familiarise them with their course, the campus and the services on offer. The University of Lincoln is particularly friendly and we have a close-knit, supportive community.
All of our on-campus accommodation is self-catered and students will need pots, pans, utensils, bedding and towels. It’s a good idea to pack some food, toiletries and cleaning products for the first few days before your son or daughter visits a supermarket. Students need to arrange a TV licence if they wish to watch live TV in their room and if it is not included in their rent. Students will receive a suggested packing list when they receive confirmation of their accommodation.
Your child's academic achievement will culminate in their graduation ceremony. At Lincoln, this is held inside the city’s stunning medieval cathedral.
