Learning Beyond Registration courses (LBR)

What is LBR?

Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) is the name used for education funded by Health Education East Midlands (HEEM) to provide non-medical and NHS professionals with skills based training (subject to their eligibility). The aim is to support healthcare staff to gain skills that are a key priority for the workforce delivery of their respective trust. The LBR contract supports registered healthcare professionals wanting to ‘top-up’ from diploma level to undergraduate degree level as well as those who require individual skills-based courses. The LBR contract now supports those wishing to progress onto the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice – meaning we now offer Postgraduate level study too.


The process of applying for a place on an LBR funded course is as follows:

1)       Read the Check my Eligibility document

2)       Select a course from the LBR course list

3)       Discuss with your line manager and complete any internal training request processes

4)       Complete the on-line application form located at the top of each course page

5)       If you need a copy for reference, print before you press ‘Submit’

6)       Submit your application form

7)       You will receive an email confirming receipt of your application form

8)       Within 7 days of submitting your application form you will receive an email with further details


Within 7 days of submitting your application form, you will receive an email confirming the stage your application has reached. If you are eligible for LBR funding, approval will be sought from your LBR lead (see Who is My LBR lead?). If you are not eligible for LBR funding, but your employer has agreed to sponsor you or you intend to self-fund, you will receive details on how your application will be processed in line with HEEM prioritisation policy.

If approval is not given by your LBR lead you will be notified as soon as possible.

Confirmation of your place

As soon as your application has been approved you will receive confirmation of your place via email. In the event that a particular course does not receive enough applications for it to run, you will be notified straight away and if possible, offered a place on the next available date.

4-6 weeks before the course starts you will receive your joining instructions pack via email.


On day one of your course, you will enrol with the university. You will be required to bring with you a recognised form of photo identification that confirms your nationality e.g passport. Unfortunately, you will not be able to enrol without this and this could delay receiving access to university systems and the library.
