The Course

This Business and Management degree is designed for students who want to work in the fast-paced global world of private and public organisations, coordinating teams and using resources efficiently, or perhaps establishing and running their own business.

Lincoln International Business School aims to produce enterprising, employable graduates with the skills and problem-solving abilities to take an international perspective and to make a difference in business. Students are encouraged to think and act as a manager, develop their critical-thinking skills and build a broad knowledge of core business subject areas.

The Course

The Business and Management course at Lincoln aims to combine intellectual rigour with personal development, as well as seeking to offer a grounding in the core principles of business such as marketing, finance, human resource management, operations and decision making.

Development is a real focus of this course, which means we devote a lot of time, effort and attention into building range and scope into our students' personal portfolios.

In the first year of the degree, students can study contemporary business analysis, organisational behaviour, communications and finance and marketing. During the second year, students have the opportunity to investigate some of the more complex aspects of management including decision-making, human resource management, finance, innovation and operations. The final year allows students to specialise in areas such as corporate social responsibility, crisis management, entrepreneurship or finance.

In addition, there is the opportunity to take a year-long work placement (Professional Practice) after the second year. This can allow students to gain valuable experience and apply their learning in practice. This allows for several options such as a placement year, a consultancy project or a work-based dissertation.

Students are encouraged to develop independence in their thinking and managing their own time within a framework of direction and support offered by teaching staff. The course aims to sensitise students to issues of codes of professional conduct and ethical behaviour.

Contact Hours and Reading for a Degree

Students on this programme learn from academic staff who are often engaged in world-leading or internationally excellent research or professional practice. Contact time can be in workshops, practical sessions, seminars or lectures and may vary from module to module and from academic year to year. Tutorial sessions and project supervision can take the form of one-to-one engagement or small group sessions. Some courses offer the opportunity to take part in external visits and fieldwork.

It is still the case that students read for a degree and this means that in addition to scheduled contact hours, students are required to engage in independent study. This allows you to read around a subject and to prepare for lectures and seminars through wider reading, or to complete follow up tasks such as assignments or revision. As a general guide, the amount of independent study required by students at the University of Lincoln is that for every hour in class you are expected to spend at least two to three hours in independent study.

This module is aimed at those students who have decided to take a year out of formal studies to gain accredited work experience and are registered on a degree programme with an accredited professional practice element. Students are introduced to the underlying rationale for crisis management and business continuity initiatives both from a theoretical and professional perspective.

The module examines the positioning of crisis management within an organisation’s overall strategic plan by reference to examples of good practice from organisations at home and abroad. Students can examine the role and function of effective crisis communication during times of crisis. In this module, complexity of the relationship between knowledge, theories and action is explored. The module seeks to increase the students’ ability of conducting a self-directed, reflexive inquiry - conscious of its own assumptions and contexts in which it develops – in order to improve awareness of positionality of managerial actions, and thus to assist the future development of responsible managers and sustainable organisations.

A wide range of assessment strategies are used during this programme. Students are expected to move in a continuous process from a dependent learning state to one of independence. At the end of the degree course, it is expected that students will be much more autonomous and reflexive individuals equipped with a set of skills which will enable them to operate successfully in society and the world of work.

Assessment Feedback

Methods of Assessment

The way students are assessed on this course may vary for each module. Student as Producer

Student as Producer is a model of teaching and learning that encourages academics and undergraduate students to collaborate on research activities. It is a programme committed to learning through doing.

The Student as Producer initiative was commended by the QAA in our 2012 review and is one of the teaching and learning features that makes the Lincoln experience unique.

Students have the opportunity to take a year-long work placement (Professional Practice) after the second year. Students can complete a placement year, a consultancy project or a work-based dissertation, which can provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge to a real business setting.

Please note that students who choose to undertake a work placement do not pay tuition fees for that year, but are required to cover their travel, accommodation and general living costs.

Placement Year

When students are on an optional placement in the UK or overseas or studying abroad, they will be required to cover their own transport and accommodation and meals costs. Placements can range from a few weeks to a full year if students choose to undertake an optional sandwich year in industry.

Students are encouraged to obtain placements in industry independently. Tutors may provide support and advice to students who require it during this process.

Additional Costs

For each course students may find that there are additional costs. These may be with regard to the specific clothing, materials or equipment required, depending on their subject area. Some courses provide opportunities for students to undertake field work or field trips. Where these are compulsory, the cost for the travel, accommodation and meals may be covered by the University and so is included in the fee. Where these are optional students will normally (unless stated otherwise) be required to pay their own transportation, accommodation and meal costs.

With regards to text books, the University provides students who enrol with a comprehensive reading list and our extensive library holds either material or virtual versions of the core texts that students are required to read. However, students may prefer to purchase some of these for themselves and will therefore be responsible for this cost. Where there may be exceptions to this general rule, information will be displayed in a section titled Other Costs below.

Access to Higher Education Diploma: A minimum of 45 level 3 credits at merit or above will be required.

In addition, applicants must have a minimum of five GCSEs (or the equivalent) at grade C or above, including English and Maths.

We encourage applications from mature students and we will give special individual consideration to those that are in this category and do not have the standard entry requirements.

This module is aimed at those students who have decided to take a year out of formal studies to gain accredited work experience and are registered on a degree programme with an accredited professional practice element. The Professional Practice Year aims to give students a continuous experience of full-time work within an organisation.

It should be a three way co-operative activity between employer, student and University from which all parties benefit. Students can choose to pursue a variety of options including a placement year, a consultancy project or a work-based dissertation. This module explores various qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis. Students will have the chance to learn how to conduct, transcribe and analyse semi-structured and open-ended interviews and other forms of text. This module addresses the implications of interruption to business and the issues and problems that may arise in connection with measures designed to counteract the effect of such interruption. Students are introduced to the underlying rationale for crisis management and business continuity initiatives both from a theoretical and professional perspective. The module examines the positioning of crisis management within an organisation’s overall strategic plan by reference to examples of good practice from organisations at home and abroad.

Students can examine the role and function of effective crisis communication during times of crisis. Approaches to crisis management are evaluated and applied to a range of organisational case studies. Philosophy of Management (Core)

In this module, complexity of the relationship between knowledge, theories and action is explored. The module seeks to increase the students’ ability of conducting a self-directed, reflexive inquiry - conscious of its own assumptions and contexts in which it develops – in order to improve awareness of positionality of managerial actions, and thus to assist the future development of responsible managers and sustainable organisations.

In the first year, assessment is 59% coursework, 14% practical exams, and 27% written exams. In the second year it is 65% coursework, 7% practical exams, and 28% written exams. In the third year it is 69% coursework, 15% practical exams, and 16% written exams.

The way students are assessed on this course may vary for each module. Examples of assessment methods that are used include coursework, such as written assignments, reports or dissertations; practical exams, such as presentations, performances or observations; and written exams, such as formal examinations or in-class tests. The University of Lincoln’s policy is to ensure that staff return assessments to students promptly.

Entrepreneurship

Professional Practice

The additional year offers the opportunity for students to complete a period of work experience after their second year of study, in order to apply their knowledge in a real business setting. Those who choose to undertake a professional practice year are not required to pay tuition fees for that year, but will be required to pay their travel, accommodation and general living costs.

Those students who are unable to undertake or choose not to participate in the Professional Practice year scheme, may have the option to undertake a work-related project such as a piece of consultancy or an enterprise project.

Placement Year

When students are on an optional placement in the UK or overseas or studying abroad, they will be required to cover their own transport and accommodation and meals costs. Placements can range from a few weeks to a full year if students choose to undertake an optional sandwich year in industry.

Students are encouraged to obtain placements in industry independently. Tutors may provide support and advice to students who require it during this process.

Additional Costs

For each course students may find that there are additional costs. These may be with regard to the specific clothing, materials or equipment required, depending on their subject area. Some courses provide opportunities for students to undertake field work or field trips. Where these are compulsory, the cost for the travel, accommodation and meals may be covered by the University and so is included in the fee. Where these are optional students will normally (unless stated otherwise) be required to pay their own transportation, accommodation and meal costs.

With regards to text books, the University provides students who enrol with a comprehensive reading list and our extensive library holds either material or virtual versions of the core texts that students are required to read. However, students may prefer to purchase some of these for themselves and will therefore be responsible for this cost. Where there may be exceptions to this general rule, information will be displayed in a section titled Other Costs below.

Access to Higher Education Diploma: A minimum of 45 level 3 to include 30 credits at merit or above.

In addition, applicants must have a minimum of three GCSEs (or the equivalent) at grade C or above, including English and Maths.

We encourage applications from mature students and we will give special individual consideration to those that are in this category and do not have the standard entry requirements.

Degree preparation courses for international students:

For international students who do not meet criteria for direct entry to this degree we offer the International Year One in Business and Management. Depending on your English language level you will study three or four terms then progress directly to the second year of this degree, providing you meet the required progression requirements. Facilities

This course is taught in the award-winning David Chiddick Building, which is situated in the centre of the city of Lincoln on the Brayford campus. It provides dedicated teaching and learning spaces and comprises lecture theatres, workshop rooms, IT laboratories and a café. Software including SAGE is available for you to use, as well as SPSS, Datastream (the source of financial and economic data), and FT.com.

At Lincoln, we constantly invest in our campus as we aim to provide the best learning environment for our students. Whatever the area of study, the University strives to ensure you have access to the specialist equipment and resources you need to develop the skills you may need in their future career.
