The Course

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Social Policy degree aims to give students the opportunity to study the nature, causes, control and prevention of criminal behaviour, alongside an examination of how social policy is created and how it influences the way we live.

Criminology and social policy are interdisciplinary subjects that draw on many aspects of the social sciences. Students may use a variety of approaches to examine crime, criminal justice, poverty, social exclusion and inequality, and other social issues, tackling difficult and often controversial topics, including current issues in the news. These subjects draw on links with local employers, such as criminal justice agencies and councils, to enable students to learn from real-world knowledge and practices.

Teaching is informed by the research expertise of academic staff, who regularly contribute to national policy debates in these fields.

Students on the course have opportunities to undertake a work placement or apply for a study abroad year.

The Course

Drawing on insights from sociology, policy, law, and the social sciences more generally, criminologists specialising in social policy not only consider how crime is defined, experienced, or explained: they explore society’s responses to it, tackling the complex social problems that can lead to crime.

This degree enables students to study the nature, causes, control, and prevention of crime, alongside an examination of how social policy is developed and how it influences the way we live. Students may use a variety of approaches to examine crime, criminal justice, poverty, social exclusion and inequality, and other social issues, tackling difficult and often controversial topics.

Throughout the course, students can explore issues such as identity, citizenship, and social justice in order to evidence the ways in which criminal justice approaches are dependent on a broad network of political, economical, and social controls. These subjects draw on links with local employers, such as criminal justice agencies and councils, to enable students to learn from real-world knowledge and practices.

This programme is designed for those who are looking for a course that aims to provide the foundation for considering some of the most contentious issues in contemporary society.

It is designed for those who consider the challenging issues which Criminology and Social Policy address not merely interesting but worthy of understanding as more complex issues than are 'popularly' thought.

In the first year, students study images of crime and criminal justice, key social science concepts, social issues and justice, as well as applying research skills to social problems. Students can build on these foundations in year two and may choose from a range of optional modules influenced not only by social policy and criminology, but also sociology and politics.

In the third year, students can study punishment theory and policies, community and and policy making, and may choose to specialise in diverse topics including families, human rights, genocide and civil society, again drawing on a number of the School’s subjects.

Studying Criminology and Social Policy at the University of Lincoln involves both directed and independent learning. Most modules are delivered through a combination of weekly lectures and associated seminars and workshops. The seminars provide an opportunity for students to discuss issues raised in the lectures and engage in critical reflection on the issues being studied. Students will also have the opportunity to meet with staff in individual tutorial sessions.

As well as directed study, students are expected to undertake independent learning using traditional library resources as well as a wide range of electronic resources.

Contact Hours and Reading for a Degree

Students on this programme learn from academic staff who are often engaged in world-leading or internationally excellent research or professional practice. Contact time can be in workshops, practical sessions, seminars or lectures and may vary from module to module and from academic year to year. Tutorial sessions and project supervision can take the form of one-to-one engagement or small group sessions. Some courses offer the opportunity to take part in external visits and fieldwork.

It is still the case that students read for a degree and this means that in addition to scheduled contact hours, students are required to engage in independent study. This allows you to read around a subject and to prepare for lectures and seminars through wider reading, or to complete follow up tasks such as assignments or revision. As a general guide, the amount of independent study required by students at the University of Lincoln is that for every hour in class you are expected to spend at least two to three hours in independent study.

The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the main components of the Criminal Justice ‘System’, through an analysis of criminal justice policies and practices.

The module seeks to explore popular images of criminal justice, and contrasts these depictions with an informed examination of a number of the central pillars of this alleged system. Students also have the opportunity to examine the complexities and contradictions which exist within the so-called ‘system’ of criminal justice.

The relationship between images of crime and the resulting criminal justice response forms the basis of the module, and it is hoped that this introduction will encourage students to consider the extent of the so-called ‘problem of crime’ and the limits of current criminal justice ‘solutions’.

This module aims to address a variety of issues relating to political parties in the United Kingdom. The political science literature covers a wide variety of topics around parties. Amongst those which are examined in this module are the following; the historical development of parties; the role of parties in terms of mobilisation of support, electioneering and campaigning, recruitment of personnel; representation of the electorate and issue-based politics; and the partisan divide. These will be examined primarily within the context of a discussion of the three major parties within the British political system including their development, their ideological tenets and their contemporary positions. However, towards the end of the module these will be set against the position of other parties within the UK including the Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru and the Northern Irish parties, to which will be added a comparative perspective, drawing upon the roles and experiences of parties in Western Europe.

Building on the level 1 module Applying Research, this module seeks to systematically scrutinise examples of research undertaken in the subject area of Social Policy/Sociology. The module has two main aims. This module encourages students to undertake one or more external activities relevant to their programme of study, and to engage in a critical reflection of the nature of this activity and how it relates to society as a whole and to their personal development as individuals. Relevant activities may involve significant interaction with an organisation outside the University providing an appropriate experience additional to the student’s programme of studies, such as voluntary work or mentoring within a service-providing organisation.

Please note that students will be expected to play a significant role in initiating and arranging their programme of experience and to take responsibility for the frequency and form of experience. This module critically examines the deviant activities of the powerful and their impact on the struggle for social justice. In contrast to much of orthodox criminology, which tends to focus its attention ‘downwards’, and onto the actions of the poor, dispossessed and relatively powerless, this module shifts the gaze ‘upwards’, and onto the harmful activities of states, corporations and similarly powerful collectives. Drawing from a myriad of human rights frameworks, a critical stance is taken towards the concepts of crime, power and legitimacy to understand and explain the deviant activities of these ‘elites’, and illuminate potential avenues for prevention, protection and redress.

This module explores the issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in contemporary society. GBV is understood as behaviour or attitudes underpinned by inequitable power relations that hurt, threaten or undermine people because of their gender or (perceived) sexuality.

The module starts by addressing the definitions and conceptual boundaries utilised in understanding GBV, and key theoretical perspectives on GBV, taking an in-depth look at debates in GBV scholarship, such as issues around intersectionality, patriarchy and patriarchal bargain, e.g., whether this is a useful concept and how far it can explain (global) gendered power relations. These issues will be developed through case studies of specific forms of GBV such as domestic violence and sexual coercion and rape. These case studies will explore specific forms of GBV in the context of the broader theoretical debates, as well as the current knowledge base on incidence, prevalence and responses to GBV. The module will also explore theoretical, methodological and ethical considerations when researching GBV.

This module explores the concept and practice of global governance. International Relations scholars are increasingly concerned with how international organisations work and how they might work better. Of particular interest is the governance of issues that are inherently global; that is, those that transcend national borders. Examples include health, the environment, poverty, trade, finance, security, conflict and crime.

The module begins with the historical development of international institutions and key theories of global governance. It then examines present day international organisations, in terms of their power, efficacy and impact. The final part of the module assesses whether current governance arrangements are addressing global challenges sufficiently well or whether there is potential and scope for improvement.

This Level 3 Module will build upon the skills and knowledge gained during Level 2’s research modules. At Level 3, students will work with their supervisors to produce a research project. The Independent Study module will be guided by a clear process of refining research proposals, working with supervisors, initiation of lines of enquiry; implementation and monitoring of research activities over the academic year. Therefore, the Independent Study module will be guided by a clearly demarcated process of: research proposal; refinement; supervisor allocation; critical comment; initiation of lines of enquiry; implementation and monitoring of research activities over the academic year. Therein student progress will be reviewed in relation to research undertaken, clarity of objectives, report/dissertation plan and the work/chapters undertaken thus far. This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge of how the UK Parliament works, in theory and in practice. It will aim to examine Parliament’s twin relationships with the Executive and with the citizen, and situate these within broader theories and debates about democratic accountability and the nature of representation.

The module also aims to bring students into closer contact with Parliament through handling Parliamentary materials and by facilitating contact with Parliamentarians through, for example an external speaker series, and when possible an optional visit to Parliament.

Historically, imprisonment was used to punish those who had broken the law by punishing the body; in comparison imprisonment today has multiple aims, to punish, to deter and to rehabilitate. This interdisciplinary module will explore the issues of race, racism, race relations and racial conflict, and resistance to racism in contemporary UK and worldwide. Although the main focus of this module is on the UK, examples from different parts of the world and a comparative lens will enable us to examine these issues from a global perspective. War Crimes and Genocide (Option)

This module is constructed as an attempt to understand the ‘anatomy’ of war crimes and genocide – their origins, ideological basis, socio-political contexts, the techniques and technologies used and relevant theoretical perspectives.

The assessment on the course is designed to test and enhance students' knowledge, skills and abilities and aims to help prepare them for the demands of work.

In the first year, assessment is 79% coursework, 14% practical exams, and 7% written exams. In the second year it is 72.5% coursework, 10.5% practical exams, and 17% written exams. In the third year it is 88% coursework, 7% practical exams, and 6% written exams.

The way students are assessed on this course may vary for each module. The course aims to develop written communication skills through essays and examinations, oral communication skills through presentations, literature searching and review through essays, examinations and presentations, and computer literacy skills through word-processing and use of electronic resources. In the final year, students have the opportunity to combine their skills and undertake their own chosen area of study in the preparation of an Independent Study.

Research Base

There is an active and broad academic research base in the School, which includes study in the areas of war crimes, the penal system, philosophy of punishment, the social exclusion of older people, policy making and implementation, domestic violence, poverty and social security, and the policing of lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender people.

Study Abroad Initiative

Students from the School of Social and Political Sciences have the opportunity to enrol at partner institutions in the USA, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands during the third year of their undergraduate degree programme*.

The Study Abroad Initiative is available to those who have successfully completed years one and two of their degree and enables students to spend a year studying overseas during what would be their third year of study. During the year abroad students will not pay any additional tuition fees.

Students will be responsible for their travel and accommodation costs in addition to their normal living costs throughout the year. Where applicable, visa costs will also need to be covered by the student. Students will then return to the University of Lincoln to complete the final year of their degree.

The initiative enables students to experience their subject from a different perspective and to explore different societies and cultures.

*Only a limited number of places are available. These places are allocated competitively, subject to academic criteria.

Student as Producer

Student as Producer is a model of teaching and learning that encourages academics and undergraduate students to collaborate on research activities. It is a programme committed to learning through doing.

The Student as Producer initiative was commended by the QAA in our 2012 review and is one of the teaching and learning features that makes the Lincoln experience unique.

Students have opportunities to undertake voluntary, competitive work placements with local councils. These offer valuable experience of a professional policy environment and provide the chance to observe how policy is set by central government and executed by local authorities, including how competing priorities can result in different decisions about where to allocate resources. Please note that students are responsible for their own travel, accommodation and general living expenses while undertaking a placement.

The Work Opportunities Hub is available to support all students within the College of Social Science who are seeking to enhance their studies by engaging with a variety of work settings. This may be as part of their programme or as an activity during term time or holidays.

Placements

Some courses offer students the opportunity to undertake placements. When students are on an optional placement in the UK or overseas or studying abroad, they will be required to cover their own transport and accommodation and meals costs. Placements can range from a few weeks to a full year if students choose to undertake an optional sandwich year in industry (where available). Students are encouraged to obtain placements in industry independently. Tutors may provide support and advice to students who require it during this process.

Fees for enrolment on additional modules

Tuition fees for additional activity are payable by the student/sponsor and charged at the equivalent £ per credit point rate for each module. Additional activity includes:

- Enrolment on modules that are over and above the full credit diet for the relevant academic year

- Retakes of modules as permitted by the Board of Examiners

- In exceptional circumstances, students who are required to re-take modules can do so on an 'assessment only' basis. This means that students do not attend timetabled teaching events but are required to take the assessments/examinations associated with the module(s). The 'assessment only' fee is half of the £ per credit point fee for each module.

Exceptionally, tuition fees may not be payable where a student has been granted a retake with approved extenuating circumstances.

Additional Costs

For each course students may find that there are additional costs. These may be with regard to the specific clothing, materials or equipment required, depending on their subject area. Some courses provide opportunities for students to undertake field work or field trips. Where these are compulsory, the cost for the travel, accommodation and meals may be covered by the University and so is included in the fee. Where these are optional students will normally (unless stated otherwise) be required to pay their own transportation, accommodation and meal costs.

With regards to text books, the University provides students who enrol with a comprehensive reading list and our extensive library holds either material or virtual versions of the core texts that students are required to read. However, students may prefer to purchase some of these for themselves and will therefore be responsible for this cost.

This programme is designed for those who are looking for a course that aims to provide the foundation for considering some of the most contentious issues in contemporary society.

It is designed for those who consider the challenging issues which Criminology and Social Policy address not merely interesting but worthy of understanding as more complex issues than are 'popularly' thought.

The first year of the degree provides students with a solid knowledge base, covering images of crime and criminal justice, key social science concepts, social issues and justice, and the application of research skills to social problems. A range of optional modules builds on these foundations in year two, enabling students to tailor their degree to match their individual interests. In their third and final year, students can go on to study punishment theory and policies, community, and policy making. They can also choose to specialise in diverse topics including families, human rights, genocide, and civil society.

Studying Criminology and Social Policy at the University of Lincoln aims to combine aspects of both directed and independent learning. Each module is delivered by means of a weekly lecture and an associated seminar. These seminars are a space for students to discuss and debate issues raised in the lecture and engage in critical reflection on the set readings related to such issues. Further methods of delivery include visits from practitioners and guest speakers, collaborative workshops, and hands-on IT sessions.

Students also have the opportunity to meet with staff in individual tutorial sessions to explore in greater details their own individual learning needs. As well as this directed study, students are expected to undertake independent learning utilising traditional library material as well as a wide range of electronic resources.

Contact Hours and Reading for a Degree

Students on this programme learn from academic staff who are often engaged in world-leading or internationally excellent research or professional practice. Contact time can be in workshops, practical sessions, seminars or lectures and may vary from module to module and from academic year to year. Tutorial sessions and project supervision can take the form of one-to-one engagement or small group sessions. Some courses offer the opportunity to take part in external visits and fieldwork.

It is still the case that students read for a degree and this means that in addition to scheduled contact hours, students are required to engage in independent study. This allows you to read around a subject and to prepare for lectures and seminars through wider reading, or to complete follow up tasks such as assignments or revision. As a general guide, the amount of independent study required by students at the University of Lincoln is that for every hour in class you are expected to spend at least two to three hours in independent study.

This module aims to address a variety of issues relating to political parties in the United Kingdom. The political science literature covers a wide variety of topics around parties. Amongst those which are examined in this module are the following; the historical development of parties; the role of parties in terms of mobilisation of support, electioneering and campaigning, recruitment of personnel; representation of the electorate and issue-based politics; and the partisan divide. This module encourages students to undertake one or more external activities relevant to their programme of study, and to engage in a critical reflection of the nature of this activity and how it relates to society as a whole and to their personal development as individuals. Relevant activities may involve significant interaction with an organisation outside the University providing an appropriate experience additional to the student’s programme of studies, such as voluntary work or mentoring within a service-providing organisation.

This module explores the issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in contemporary society. GBV is understood as behaviour or attitudes underpinned by inequitable power relations that hurt, threaten or undermine people because of their gender or (perceived) sexuality.

The module starts by addressing the definitions and conceptual boundaries utilised in understanding GBV, and key theoretical perspectives on GBV, taking an in-depth look at debates in GBV scholarship, such as issues around intersectionality, patriarchy and patriarchal bargain, e.g., whether this is a useful concept and how far it can explain (global) gendered power relations. These issues will be developed through case studies of specific forms of GBV such as domestic violence and sexual coercion and rape. These case studies will explore specific forms of GBV in the context of the broader theoretical debates, as well as the current knowledge base on incidence, prevalence and responses to GBV. This Level 3 Module will build upon the skills and knowledge gained during Level 2’s research modules. At Level 3, students will work with their supervisors to produce a research project. The assessment on the course is designed to test and enhance students' knowledge, skills and abilities, and aims to help prepare them for the demands of work.

The way students are assessed on this course may vary for each module. The course aims to develop written communication skills through essays and examinations, oral communication skills through presentations, literature searching and review through essays, examinations and presentations, and computer literacy skills through word-processing and use of electronic resources. In the final year, students have the opportunity to combine their skills and undertake their own chosen area of study in the preparation of an Independent Study.

A notable feature of Criminology at Lincoln is the way in which the degree is both taught and assessed involving student-centred work. This might include group-based and individual research projects, multimedia presentations, case studies, auto-critiques, self-appraisal, vocationally relevant 'live' projects, oral examinations, and conferences. In the final year, students have the opportunity to combine their skills and undertake their own chosen area of study in the preparation of an Independent Study.

These methods are designed to make a significant contribution to the consolidation of important transferable skills – all of which are valued by employers across a range of sectors.

Research

There is an active and broad academic research base in the School, which includes study in the areas of war crimes, the penal system, philosophy of punishment, the social exclusion of older people, policy making and implementation, domestic violence, poverty and social security, and the policing of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

Study Abroad Initiative

Students from the School of Social and Political Sciences have the opportunity to enrol at partner institutions in the USA, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands during the third year of their undergraduate degree programme. The initiative enables students to experience their subject from a different perspective and to explore different societies and cultures.

Places on the scheme are allocated competitively and are subject to academic criteria. Students will not pay a tuition fee to either the University of Lincoln or their host university during this year. They will need to cover their travel, accommodation, and general living costs.

The Study Abroad Initiative is available to those who have successfully completed years one and two of their degree and enables students to spend a year studying overseas during what would be their third year of study.

Where applicable, visa costs will also need to be covered by the student. Students will then return to the University of Lincoln to complete the final year of their degree.

Student as Producer

Student as Producer is a model of teaching and learning that encourages academics and undergraduate students to collaborate on research activities. It is a programme committed to learning through doing.

The Student as Producer initiative was commended by the QAA in our 2012 review and is one of the teaching and learning features that makes the Lincoln experience unique.

Students have opportunities to undertake a voluntary, competitive work placement with a local council. This offers valuable experience of a professional policy environment and provide the chance to observe how policy is set by central government and executed by local authorities, including how competing priorities can result in different decisions about where to allocate resources. Those who choose to undertake a work placement are responsible for covering their travel, accommodation, and general living costs.

Placements

Some courses offer students the opportunity to undertake placements. When students are on an optional placement in the UK or overseas or studying abroad, they will be required to cover their own transport and accommodation and meals costs. Placements can range from a few weeks to a full year if students choose to undertake an optional sandwich year in industry (where available). Students are encouraged to obtain placements in industry independently. Tutors may provide support and advice to students who require it during this process.

Fees for enrolment on additional modules

Tuition fees for additional activity are payable by the student/sponsor and charged at the equivalent £ per credit point rate for each module. Additional activity includes:

- Enrolment on modules that are in addition to the validated programme curriculum

- Enrolment on modules that are over and above the full credit diet for the relevant academic year

- Retakes of modules as permitted by the Board of Examiners

- In exceptional circumstances, students who are required to re-take modules can do so on an 'assessment only' basis. This means that students do not attend timetabled teaching events but are required to take the assessments/examinations associated with the module(s). The 'assessment only' fee is half of the £ per credit point fee for each module.

Exceptionally, tuition fees may not be payable where a student has been granted a retake with approved extenuating circumstances.

Additional Costs

For each course students may find that there are additional costs. These may be with regard to the specific clothing, materials or equipment required, depending on their subject area. Some courses provide opportunities for students to undertake field work or field trips. Where these are compulsory, the cost for the travel, accommodation and meals may be covered by the University and so is included in the fee. Where these are optional students will normally (unless stated otherwise) be required to pay their own transportation, accommodation and meal costs.

With regards to text books, the University provides students who enrol with a comprehensive reading list and our extensive library holds either material or virtual versions of the core texts that students are required to read. However, students may prefer to purchase some of these for themselves and will therefore be responsible for this cost.

Facilities

The University has invested more than £350 million in its Brayford Pool Campus, with further plans to invest in additional facilities and refurbishments of existing buildings. Whatever the area of study, the University strives to ensure students have access to specialist equipment and resources, to develop the skills, which they may need in their future career.
