Course Overview

This programme is designed to develop the skills required by local, national, and international employers, as well as the diverse populations they serve. Delivered on our Brayford Pool Campus by subject specialists, the course content supports a wide range of career pathways, including (but not limited to) medicine, nursing, pharmacy, allied health professions, midwifery, social work, social care, and environmental health. A broad selection of optional modules reflects cross-cutting themes and the contemporary public health landscape.

How You Study

This programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, directed and independent study, online resources, and our virtual learning environment. This variety gives you the opportunity to collaborate with other students while also developing your own areas of interest and research.

Our expert teaching team brings a wealth of industry experience and extensive research expertise, offering valuable insights into contemporary public health practice. The programme includes content on global health, rural and coastal health inequalities, and supports students in exploring professional opportunities. In the final module, Independent Study, you will undertake a project focused on your home country or a specific area of interest within the field.

Alongside accessing a range of evidence-based resources on our Virtual Learning Environment, you'll be able to access the wide variety of support services across the University, including our on-campus health library in the Ross Lucas Medical Sciences Building.

Module Overview

This module explores key contemporary global health challenges and contemporary international frameworks. You can develop critical understanding of common global concerns, interconnectivity of our world, threats from communicable and non- communicable diseases, climate change, impact of widening and increasing health inequalities. You will appreciate how global policy and other influences such as climate change, global economy and conflict can direct and inform local and national policy.

Module Overview

This module will develop your criticality in relation to politics, economics, healthcare practice and policy, and interagency working. You can examine leadership in the landscape of public health and how this applies to self, community, and internationally. You can learn key concepts (economics) that inform funding and decision making. The module will focus on current landscape and examine health challenges, including 'value for money' , economic evaluation and impact.

This module empowers you to take charge of your learning by designing a research project that aligns with your academic and professional aspirations. Whether you choose to conduct a systematic review, develop a project proposal, or prepare an article for publication, you’ll engage in critical analysis, enquiry, and synthesis essential skills for advancing in your field. Guided by professional discussion and academic mentorship, this is your opportunity to deepen your expertise, explore meaningful topics, and contribute to contemporary discourse in your discipline. Module Overview

The module aims to introduce the fundamentals of public health and support your deeper understanding of populations and what determines 'health'. You can appreciate macro, meso, and micro approaches to the social determinants, physical environment, disease as well as health inequalities that impact on and determine the health of populations. You can also build upon your existing graduate knowledge of utilising research in writing and investigation. You will be supported to gain a broader knowledge of methodology, epidemiology, and develop skills in appreciating statistics, literature, studies, and key data in relation to public health.

Module Overview

This is where you can investigate and evaluate public health interventions. You can draw on existing knowledge of populations, determinants, and health inequalities. You can learn about the different approaches to promoting health and well being via population level campaigns and programmes, determinant, and policy led interventions and at an individual level. You can recognise the role of health protection and genomics and disease prevention.

Module Overview

This module explores interdisciplinary research with a focus on the most challenging health and social care issues facing rural and coastal communities.

You will be encouraged to develop a deep knowledge of place based inequities . You can develop a critical understanding of the barriers to health and social care access as well as an appreciation of different research methods, impact of environmental factors, and policy and advocacy for rural and coastal communities.

How you are assessed

This programme uses a range of assessments designed to cultivate critical thinking, collaborative skills, and leadership qualities.

By fostering innovation and leadership in health and social care practice, the goal is to develop authentic assessments that mirror real-world scenarios in public health, including recording and reporting practices. The final independent assessment aims to allow you to integrate your learning and create a meaningful summary of your studies.

Entry Requirements 2026-27

Entry Requirements

A minimum of a UK undergraduate degree at 2:2 (or an equivalent international qualification) in a relevant subject area is required. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Candidates who do not meet this requirement may still be considered individually. Such applicants must demonstrate how their experience in multidisciplinary public health (for example, awards, scholarships, or relevant paid or unpaid work experience), together with their knowledge and skills, equips them to undertake study at Master's level.

All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall, with no individual component below 6.0.

What Can I Do with This Qualification 

Graduates from this programme may pursue various employment opportunities across healthcare organisations, government agencies, research, and higher education. The programme is designed to prepare students for the public health or voluntary sector roles aligned to public health. For students already employed in public health, the qualification will be a useful step towards internal roles and promotions.
