MA Design for Exhibition and Museums

MA 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time, 24 months work-based Lincoln School of Architecture Lincoln A good honours degree or equivalent level of experience.

Introduction

The course supports the main approaches to the design of interactive spaces and forms of communication: design research, design development and interactive information design. Design research deals with project planning, curatorial research and design brief construction, scriptwriting and design management.

Students negotiate a programme of projects tailored to meet individual interests and needs. These may focus on, or combine an interest in, trade shows, museums, international expositions, commercial and cultural events, retail and leisure environments, theatre, television and film stage sets, heritage sites and visitor centres.

Aims

The course aims to develop a reflective, knowledgeable, professional and skilful practitioner in design or design-related research. Design development deals with creative direction, concept development and visualisation, space planning and individual exhibit interpretation.

Interactive information design deals with integrated development of in-situ and online new media for exhibitions and museums.

The programme proceeds in three levels. Each stage attracts 60 points of level M credit under the national Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS):

Postgraduate Certificate (60 credit points)
Research Methods and Cultural Theory – 15 points
Professional Studies – 15 points
Certificate Project – 30 points

Postgraduate Diploma (120 credit points)
Research Preparation – 15 points
Diploma Project – 45 points

Masters (180 credit points) 
Thesis Project – 60 credit points

Teaching & Assessment

For those who need to develop their design skills before embarking on the masters programme, preparatory design studies are available from the Design for Exhibition & Museums subject in the School of Architecture.

Students may study full-time, part-time or work-based and may change mode of study at the end of any stage. All students enrol on the Masters programme. Students may then elect to take a stage qualification or to pursue the full programme.

Assessment is by project work and written assignment. There are no time-limited examinations.

Our postgraduates are successful in a number of different areas within exhibition and museum design and commercial design centres worldwide.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have or expect to receive an upper-second or first class honours degree or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience. Applicants from backgrounds outside of art, design and architecture will also need to demonstrate an aptitude for design.

All applicants should submit a digital portfolio with their application.
