MA Design

MA 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time Lincoln School of Art and Design Lincoln 2.2 honours degree. Mature students may be allowed non-standard entry if they have longstanding involvement in the subject.

Introduction

The MA Design encourages the reflective application of critical and informed thought to design practice across a range of disciplines which are key to employment.

As a practice-based programme, the MA Design provides opportunities to further develop relevant creative, intellectual and technical skills. It aims to stimulate an interest in the contextual issues integral to contemporary design practice. Great prominence is given to the design process, effective research, creative thinking, critical reflection and individual expression.

The MA Design is an individually negotiated programme of study with physical resources and staff expertise provided by the University. Students plan their own scheme of work with the support of a personal mentor who oversees their progress throughout the course. This allows for a flexible approach and a wide variety of outcomes, tailored to suit them.

Content

expand

A 'planning phase' and some key taught elements are incorporated early in the programme. The first 14 to 15 weeks consist of a series of lectures/seminars, which introduce the programme and provide a firm foundation for successfully managing the programme as a whole. The majority of the programme centres on a major practical project tailored to your aspirations. A written assignment is required for Master's level.

Teaching & Assessment

expand

Assessment is through project work and written studies. Students normally exhibit in a Final Show of work held during September.

Careers

expand

The programme will enable students to further their own special interests and career objectives, deepening their understanding of the subject and providing a focus to their professional activities. The rationales for engaging in such a programme include enhancing employment potential and as a stepping stone to further academic research.

Previous students have pursued careers as practising designers or continued their research by registering for MRes, MPhil or PhD study.

Entry Requirements

expand

Normally, applicants are expected to possess an honours degree in a related subject area. Mature students may be allowed non-standard entry if they can demonstrate a long-standing involvement in the subject. They may also be asked to provide evidence of their suitability for the course such as supporting portfolio/images – and each application will be dealt with on its individual merits.

It is helpful if applicants prepare an outline proposal detailing the option(s) chosen and the focus of the investigation they wish to undertake prior to interview, to ensure that the University is able to offer appropriate support if the application is successful.

Student Comments

"The programme has encouraged the reflective application of critical and informed thought to my practice across a range of disciplines inspiring my final major practical project to be short-listed for a BT Digital Music Award earlier this year."
Terry Wells

"The MA course in Design provided me with the unique opportunity to investigate and question my own field of interest. Both the theoretical and practical research I did during the course has in the end given me much more than simply just a degree; it has broadened my horizon. On both a professional level as well as on a personal level – a benefit for life."
