MA Contemporary Curatorial Practice

MA Lincoln School of Art and Design Lincoln A good Honours degree (2:2 or above) in a related discipline or comparable previous professional experience

Introduction

MA Contemporary Curatorial Practice is a new taught postgraduate programme, co-delivered with professionals from The Collection, Lincoln. It is informed by the research and practice of contemporary curating.

Recent years have seen a paradigm shift in the role of the curator. The traditional role of the interpreter, carer and custodian of cultural artefacts has broadened to include being an organiser, selector and disseminator of a variety of cultural aspects, within and beyond the gallery and museum.

This new programme aims to provide students with an understanding of the production, interpretation and reception of cultural artefacts and cultural events in the 21st Century. It will equip students with the ability to apply this knowledge in practice, together with a comprehensive understanding of the role and responsibilities of the curator within contemporary society.

Module 1 - Curatorial Thinking (PG Certificate Level)

In this module, students are introduced to effective methodologies for the research and application of both theoretical and practical curatorial ideas. In addition, lectures and seminars introduce key aspects of the history, theory and practice of curating from the 20th Century up to the present day.  Students choose to research and reflect upon a range of study options, each focusing on specific curatorial contexts.  Feedback tutorial support will enable students to present their work, write up their findings in a curatorial research report and develop a project concept and proposal for development in later stages of the programme.  Students will be expected to maintain and continually update a reflective Curating Log throughout the programme.

Module 2 - Curatorial Approaches (PG Diploma Level)

This module is concerned with testing and progressing research through a practical curatorial project and a written curatorial report to enable students to confirm the parameters of their curatorial practice for the masters stage.  Students will identify, research and write a detailed case study of a specific curatorial project. They will be expected to make contact with relevant curators and institutions. Advice and support will be given and there will be opportunities to engage in work related learning in a regional arts organisation or institution. The emphasis focuses on extending and deepening knowledge gained in the first module and an gaining an understanding of the role and responsibilities of the curator within its wider external contexts.

Module 3 - Curatorial Practice (Masters Level)

The prime focus of this module will be the application and dissemination of a defined curatorial context and strategy based on the knowledge gained in the preceding two modules. Students will be able to negotiate the final form of their curatorial project to be undertaken during the module.  It may take the form of: Exhibition, Off Site Project, Event, Dissertation or International Project proposal.  This module will be an intensive period of study and will enable students to develop a major piece of work that clearly evidences critical engagement with their research topic.  Students are expected to act autonomously throughout this module and to produce work that is of a high professional standard.
