How Does It Work?

An apprenticeship includes on-the-job training, delivered alongside academic study, helping apprentices work towards a nationally recognised qualification. Apprenticeships typically take one to five years to complete depending on the level being studied.

As an apprentice you’ll be an employee earning a wage and getting holiday pay, work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, and get time for training and study related to your role (at least 20% of your normal working hours). Employers can get help from the government to pay for apprenticeship training and assessment. The funding you are eligible for is determined by the number of people you employ, the annual payroll of your company, and the age of the apprentices you employ.

You will be assessed at the end of your training to ensure you are competent in your job and can perform all the aspects of the role. This is called an end-point assessment and checks the knowledge, skills, and behaviours you have learned throughout your apprenticeship.

It’s incredible how much I learned over the four-year period and learning on the job means you can really relate to your workplace and apply the theory to reality. The apprentice route was definitely the best route to take to start my career.
