Champion of sustainable architecture and design joins University of Lincoln
Professor Glen Mills A prominent international architect and scholar has been appointed to lead the School of Architecture & Design at the University of Lincoln, UK.

Professor Glen Mills comes to Lincoln with a vision to grow the School’s identity as a centre of excellence for scholarship and practice in sustainable architecture, design and city-making.

“My vision rests on the fact that we live in an age in which there is a huge and growing appetite for design, where everything from media campaigns and healthcare plans to information technologies and built environments need to be functional, sustainable and elegant,” said Professor Mills.

“The challenge is to achieve design innovation that is responsive to contemporary mega trends, including demographic and social transformation, massive urbanisation, global warming, technological inventions, new dynamics in the global economy, the need for food security and the need for clean energy. The University of Lincoln’s School of Architecture & Design therefore has an important role to play as a natural centre for interdisciplinary design activity in these areas.”

Professor Mills joins the University of Lincoln’s College of Arts from Texas A&M University in America where he was Head of the School of Architecture. He previously held posts as Professor of Architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand, and Professor and Dean of Arts at Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa.

With research focusing on the complexity of cities and human settlements, he is particularly interested in the urban design of traditional cities, such as Lincoln, the transformation of informal settlements in South Africa, and the correlations between urban form and socio-economic functions. He is currently conducting research into the relationships between spatial configuration, urban transformation and innovation in the urban economy.

As Head of the School of Architecture & Design, Professor Mills will oversee and develop its portfolio of programmes, maintain existing and build new academic and research partnerships, and coordinate and facilitate the School’s research activities. Professor Mills also begins his role with a view to exploring partnerships with other leading universities around the world.

Professor Matthew Cragoe, Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of the College of Arts at the University of Lincoln, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Glen will be joining us.  He brings with him not only a wealth of experience but also a compelling vision for the School, which will establish Lincoln as one of the go-to places for innovative, inter-disciplinary approaches to architecture and design.”
