The University of Lincoln is continuing to build upon its excellent reputation locally and nationally for the quality of its healthcare programmes by appointing a Professor of Nursing.

Dr Sara Owen will teach the BSc Nursing degree programme launched at the university’s Brayford Pool campus in September this year.

Dr Owen first trained as a general nurse (SRN) at Guy’s Hospital, London; then as an oncology nurse at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London; and finally as a mental health nurse (RMN) at the city’s Bethlem and Maudsley Hospitals.

She trained as a nurse teacher at London South Bank University and qualified as a Registered Nurse Tutor (RNT) with a degree in Nursing Education (BEd) in 1990.

Since then she has worked as a nurse tutor at the Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital; as a health lecturer at De Montfort University; and as a lecturer, research fellow, senior lecturer and reader at Nottingham University.

She has considerable teaching and course management experience including: running the mental health branch of the Bachelor of Nursing programme and the second year of the MSc in Health Policy and Organisation and developing the graduate primary care mental health workers course at Nottingham.

Dr Owen completed her PhD in 1999 in the Division of Psychiatry at Nottingham University.

Since 2002 she has secured 11 research grants; published 10 peer-reviewed papers, six academic research reports and one book chapter; and presented papers or posters at seven national and international conferences.

Head of the School of Health and Social Care Malcolm Golightley said: “The appointment of Sara Owen as the new Professor of Nursing is one of the important building blocks essential to the creation of a vibrant health and social care academic and practice community. Her appointment is very important to the school in its ambitions to be the leading provider of health and social care in the region.”
