Managing Your Money

A Student at the University of Lincoln

Support with Your Finances

University life and living away from home offer a new level of freedom, along with new responsibilities. This may be the first time you’ve had to manage your own money, so setting a budget will help you keep track of your outgoings. Our Student Funding team can help support you with any questions you may have about your finances.

Budgeting Tips

It can be hard keeping track of what you are spending and where, which is why setting yourself a realistic budget at the start of the year can really help. Setting a budget is easy, simply:

  1. Add up all of the money you’ll have coming in over the term such as maintenance loans, pocket money, and earnings from any part-time work.

  2. Work out how much money you’ll need to pay out over the term, such as accommodation, bills, and travel costs, and take this away from the money you have coming in.

  3. Divide the money you have left by the number of weeks in the term. This will give you your weekly budget for spending on things like food shopping and socialising with friends. Try to save a little each week as well – you never know when a little extra money might come in handy.
