Welcome to FdSc Nursing Associate

A nursing associate is a new and vital member of the wider nursing team in England. This is a stand-alone role which is designed to help bridge the gap between health and care assistants and registered nurses.

Nursing associates work with people of all ages and in a variety of settings in health and social care. The role will contribute to the core work of nursing, freeing up registered nurses to focus on more complex clinical care.

The School of Health and Social Care works closely with our health care partners to provide students with the opportunity to study for a Nursing Associate Foundation degree (FdSc).

The course combines work-based and directed learning and education specific to becoming a Nursing Associate, which upon successful completion leads to a Foundation degree and professional recognition, enabling you to register as a Nursing Associate with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

How You Study

Our nursing courses are offered over two academic years, consisting of 45 weeks of study per year. They utilise a range of teaching and learning styles. Students spend half of their time studying at the University and the other half gaining practical experience in nursing.

The theoretical and clinical elements of the course are centred on the NHS values of working together for patients; respect and dignity; commitment to quality care; compassion; improving lives; and everyone counts.

First-year modules aim to provide the core foundation skills for nursing, with a focus on the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and social sciences. This is built upon in the second year, where students can develop professional skills and apply ethical principles to rational decision-making.

Fundamental nursing care (Nursing Associate) 2023-24NUR1036MLevel 42023-24This module provides the opportunity to develop fundamental care skills including the principles of communication, health and safety, support of vulnerable people, an introduction to biosciences and pharmacology, moving and handling, and basic life support. This module aims to provide a theoretical and practical introduction to the skills and knowledge underpinning contemporary practice. Students can engage in hands on clinical skills session to allow them to develop and gain confidence in preparation for their first placement. This module will deliver and assess mandatory training requirements to ensure that students are appropriately prepared for their first practice-learning experience.CoreNursing and the interprofessional team (Nursing Associate) 2023-24NUR1037MLevel 42023-24Health professionals work with a wide range of different people; including other professionals, colleagues, families, carers, and the general public. Cohesive interprofessional teamwork is essential to facilitate successful and integrated healthcare services. Interprofessional teamwork is the means by which different healthcare professionals bring together their diverse knowledge, skills and talents to collaborate and achieve a common goal. It is important that students are able to recognise and understand other professional roles and responsibilities, in order to enable the interprofessional team to work collaboratively for the benefit of people and their care experience.CorePerson-centred holistic care skills for nursing associates 2023-24NUR1038MLevel 42023-24This module aims to build on skills developed in practice-based learning, to further students' understanding of holistic care practices. By applying this approach to care, students can identify factors which may place people at risk of harm and vulnerability. Students can learn how to work in partnership with people, to provide person-centred, non-discriminatory care, within professional, ethical, and legal frameworks. This will include the mandatory reporting duties to escalate concerns about people at risk of harm at any stage of the lifespan. Students will be supported to demonstrate their understanding of the issues involved in providing care and support to all people; empowering people to make decisions about their own health and care needs.CorePersonal Development and Resilience (Nursing Associate) 2023-24NUR1039MLevel 42023-24This module has been designed to help prepare students for the opportunities and challenges that starting their journey to becoming a nursing associate creates. The module explores the theory, philosophy, and concepts of personal development and resilience. Students can gain an insight into how they learn and respond in a range of different situations that have relevance to healthcare settings. Students will be supported to develop academic study skills, non-technical nursing skills, and personal resource skills; all of which are crucial to prepare them for both their academic and practice-based learning. Techniques for applying theory to practice will be demonstrated and enabled through workshops and facilitated discussions. You will develop your own individual learning plan, utilise of a range of validated questionnaires and engage with a range of supervisory techniques to inform and aid your development across the programme.CoreBecoming an accountable professional nursing associate 2024-25NUR2041MLevel 52024-25This module aims to focus on students' transition from trainee to a registered professional, as a nursing associate. Students will be supported to develop the skills they will need to become more resilient and able to deal with the complex and challenging situations they may face, whilst working within a healthcare environment, particularly in a climate of change. This module will demonstrate how the concepts of responsibility, accountability and autonomy are intrinsically linked in determining the scope of nursing associate practice. Nursing associates hold positions of responsibility and are, therefore are expected, upon registration to be accountable for their practice. The module will examine how responsibility and accountability are the cornerstones of professional practice and are represented as a key principle in The Code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates (NMC, 2015, updated 2018).CoreHealthcare Sciences (Nursing Associate) 2024-25NUR2042MLevel 52024-25This module will explore in greater depth a full range of health sciences. The module will give students the opportunity to develop an understanding of pathology, sociology, and health psychology, which impact on an individual's health. Students can develop an appreciation of the interplay between the health sciences, as it is essential in order to comprehend the biopsychosocial model of health. The application of this model is significant in health care as it broadens the scope to which health and illness can be examined and understood within clinical practice. Comprehension of the health sciences collectively acknowledges the patient as a person with an individual lifestyle and not simply as someone with a disease which has deviated them from normal functioning.CorePromoting health and preventing ill health (Nursing Associate) 2024-25NUR2043MLevel 52024-25This module will focus on supporting individuals with their health and lifestyle choices. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their skills in motivating, facilitating, and communicating change, whilst continuously promoting empowerment with individuals. Students can develop their knowledge base on best practices for promoting the health and both the psychological and emotional well-being of individuals. They will consider how the social determinants of health and mental health impact on an individuals ability to make positive health choices.CoreProviding and evaluating care (Nursing Associate) 2024-25NUR2044MLevel 52024-25This module has been designed to promote high quality, evidence based, and person-centred practice; ensuring safe and effective care delivery. The module explores core elements of the nursing associates role which will progress students' knowledge of providing care and subsequent evaluation of the care provided. Students will be required to act in the capacity of a role model for others and evaluate the quality of care provided by themselves and others, including lay carers and members of the interprofessional team. This module aims to enable students to recognise and prioritise the changing needs of people, facilitate safe discharge or transition between care services and provide high quality care at the end of life. Underpinning care are the professional values and responsibilities of the nursing associate, which will be further explored in relation to improving quality of care and services and lifelong learning.Core

How you are assessed

The way students are assessed on this course may vary for each module. Examples of assessment methods that are used include written assignments, presentations, workbooks, and practical observations. The weighting given to each assessment method may vary across each academic year.

To enhance their studies, students have access to the University's specialist clinical suites which simulate hospital and home environments. In particular, our mock ward hospital setting features realistic patient bays as well as clinical tools to provide a realistic NHS-standard facility to help you gain confidence in practice.

Entry Requirements 2023-24

This programme is suitable for new and existing health and social care staff, who are responsible for delivering direct services and who have the potential to take on greater challenges and responsibility as qualified Nursing Associates.

Applicants need to demonstrate their ability to study academic subjects at foundation degree level, debate topics and issues, study independently as well as a member of a group, and successfully complete a range of assignments including researched essays and practical tests.

Applicants must also have the right of abode in the UK.

They will need a minimum of a Grade C/4 GCSE in Maths and English or equivalent level 2 qualification such as functional skills.

Certificates of all previous qualifications will need to be provided before any offers are confirmed.

Other requirements include:

- Successful performance at an interview

- Knowledge of contemporary health and social care issues, and the nature of nursing in a public health context

- Understanding of written material and can communicate clearly and accurately in written and spoken English

- "Settled residential status" in the United Kingdom in line with the requirements of the 1971 Immigration Act

- Resident in the United Kingdom for at least three years

- Satisfactory completion of Occupational Health Check

- Satisfactory completion of an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) (formerly the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)).

When you choose Nursing in your UCAS application, you will be asked an additional question regarding criminal convictions. Here you must declare all spent and unspent criminal convictions including (but not limited to) cautions, reprimands, final warnings, bind over orders or similar and details of any minor offences, fixed penalty notices, penalty notices for disorder, ASBOs or VOOs. We cannot accept deferred applications for Nursing or Social Work. You must apply in the year you wish to start the programme.

Accreditations and Memberships

This course is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), enabling students to register as a qualified nursing associate upon successful completion.

Students are required to complete competencies for nursing associates in practice as part of the NMC: Standards and Proficiencies for Nursing Associates (2019).

Students are supported in their learning and development by a range of people with expertise in nursing, including a teaching team who have extensive experience as academics and of working in practice settings as a student. A range of other support includes a dedicated placement team, to support placements; service users, carers and other professionals to share their experiences and expertise; a dedicated Subject Librarian; Student Support and Wellbeing Service, for access to services and information.

In addition, students are supported by: 

-A university tutor who will act as your personal tutor ensuring consistency in academic and practice learning support throughout the programme

-A workplace supervisor/practice educator who works in conjunction with your university tutor to make decisions on practice assessment through joint face-to-face meetings and student supervision. They also provide learning and teaching in the workplace to support students and share information, leading to the completion of each student’s portfolio, and the completion of a report and recommendation. During complementary placements, a supervisor will be identified to work with the University tutor.

Upon completion of this FdSc Nursing Associate programme, once registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, you may work as a stand-alone nursing registrant in a range of diverse health and social care settings, from acute nursing to community care with the opportunity for further study.

Progressing towards a ‘top up’ degree to become a registered nurse with a BSc (Hons) will provide the chance to expand your skills into education, research, and health management. Some  graduates may also choose to progress their studies at postgraduate level.


Work placements are designed to prepare students to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing clinical environment, whether this be a hospital, GP surgery, or community healthcare setting.

Please note that students are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and general living expenses while undertaking a placement.
