New York Study Visit

31st October - 6th November 2009

New York City was the destination of forty undergraduate students and six members of staff on a joint Forensic Science and Sport, Coaching and Exercise Science study visit. This was the inaugural North American study visit for Sport, whilst being the fifth for Forensic Science.

The Sport, Coaching and Exercise Science students had a very busy couple of days from the off. The first full day involved a full day’s volunteer work at the New York Marathon organising and distributing the food and fluid supplies to the finishers, the work was strenuous, rewarding and inspiring for all involved. The students were privileged to see; the latest and potentially revolutionary technological developments in sports technique analysis and computer gaming at Organic Motion; receive a personal tour and in-depth review of the US Tennis Centre host to the US Tennis Grand Slam by Whitney Kraft the Director of the US Tennis Association; sample some of the sports the US has to offer.

This year’s visit coincided with the U.S. mayoral elections and the NY Yankees winning the baseball world series. Everyone was able to experience the response to these events first-hand. Students found time to enjoy the sights of New York including the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Centre and Central Park.  Some saw a show on Broadway or a basketball match at Madison Square Garden and went shopping for early Christmas presents in the likes of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.
