Hugh BochelHaving studied at the Universities of Manchester and Strathclyde Hugh then worked as a researcher at the University of Edinburgh and at the University of Kent, where he also took his PhD. He joined the University in 1990 after a period working for Essex County Council.

Teaching

Hugh contributes to a number of modules for the subjects of Politics and Social Policy, including Ideology into Practice, Integration and Exclusion, Political Parties, Understanding the Policy Process and Analysing the Policy Process. He frequently draws upon his research experience to provide examples and insights into topics. Hugh is also involved in the supervision of a number of PhD students and welcomes further enquiries in areas relevant to his interests.

Research

Hugh has wide ranging research interests in both politics and social policy. His recent and current research includes a study of parliament and welfare policy, a project looking at parliamentary scrutiny of the intelligence and security services, work on participation, including its relationship with representative democracy and editing a book on The Conservative Party and Social Policy, published by The Policy Press in 2011. In recent years external funding for Hugh’s research has included:

November 2009 – January 2012, £96,879 from The Leverhulme Trust, for a study of ‘Parliamentary scrutiny of the UK intelligence and security services’ (with Andrew Defty).

October 2007 – July 2008, £7,402 from the Nuffield Foundation Small Grants Scheme, for a study of the House of Lords and welfare (with Andrew Defty).
