Earn while you learn

Ideally, apprentices will already be employed in a role relevant to their apprenticeship training. If you are employed you will be paid a minimum of £95 per week by your employer. You will be given a contract of employment and come under the company's terms and conditions.

However, if you are not employed, we would still encourage you to apply for an Apprenticeship, as we, together with the National Apprenticeship Service, may be able to assist in finding you a vacancy.

All work places where apprentices are employed will be checked for their ability to provide an appropriate and safe working environment prior to signing up an apprentice.

Most of the training is “on the job” at your workplace, giving you the opportunity to learn practical skills relevant to your role, while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. Most apprentices attend college for some underpinning knowledge and key skill sessions, but this will be tailored to suit you and your employer.

Ongoing support is provided throughout the apprenticeship by College tutors and workplace assessors. Regular monitoring reviews are carried out in the workplace to check progress against the apprentice's individual learning plan, developed in conjunction with your training coordinator.

What qualifications do I need?

Apprentices are expected to demonstrate that they are:

  • Committed to a career in their chosen industry
  • Able to take responsibility for their own learning and development
  • Prepared to attend off the job training
  • Able to acquire the broad range of skills, knowledge and understanding required to complete the programme.

Depending on what previous qualifications you have, you could do an Apprenticeship or and Advanced Apprenticeship. You can read about specific entry requirements on individual course pages.

When can I start?

You can start on a work-based learning programme at any time of the year, on a flexible basis, but the technical certificate, which is a compulsory element, follows the traditional academic calendar and so starts in September.
