Outline of Foundation Degrees

Foundation Degrees are Higher Education qualifications that are distinctive by their vocational nature, having been developed in partnership with employers. They are intended to provide access to Higher Education to those at work, and to wherever possible, link and accredit opportunities for learning afforded at work. Delivery and assessment are inherently linked to the workplace and hence employer support is a key requirement for those joining the programme. It is intended that the majority of students will be employed and sponsored by their employer.

The programme has been initiated through consultation with representatives of the land-based industries and employer forums to provide development opportunities for those who already hold or are aspiring to key roles in the land based and environmental sectors, and to help the industry meet the growing need for skilled technicians and managers.

The curriculum reflects the wishes of employers to see those working at this level demonstrate flexibility through knowledge of a range of subjects and develop effective people and management skills, whilst acknowledging the need for well developed skills in specific disciplines.

Certificate in Land-based Studies

The Certificate in Land-based Studies is suitable for those with an interest in the countryside, especially school leavers and adults wishing to make a career change.

It is designed to develop and extend skills, knowledge and understanding in the land-based sector. It will provide the first stage in developing a career in your chosen industry upon successful completion of the programme. All students will receive instruction and training in a wide range of areas including safe working practices and personal development. Students also study five subject specific units. Upon successful completion to an agreed standard the student can progress onto a First Diploma.

First Diploma

This is normally a One year full time programme, which is a step towards a career in your specialist area. It is ideally suited to students who have little or no experience of the industry and whose GCSE's are not suitable for direct entry onto a higher level qualification.

There are no formal examinations on First Diploma programmes. All assessment is continuous through written, practical and time constrained assessments, allowing regular feedback on progress. Upon successful completion to an agreed standard the student can progress onto a National Diploma.

National Diploma

A two-year full time programme developing skills and knowledge in a particular specialism. The National Diploma combines the theory and practice of a particular subject. It is ideal for those looking to enter supervisory or managerial positions.

There are no formal examinations on National Diploma programmes. All assessment is through assignments allowing regular feedback on progress.

Successful completion boosts career opportunities or can allow progression to a Higher National Diploma or Degree.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are now the accepted route for young people, between the ages of 16 and 24, to enter work. Apprenticeships enable young people to demonstrate skills required in their job which are assessed and evidenced. On successful completion, an apprentice will have achieved an NVQ level 2 Technical Certificate and Key Skills in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT at an appropriate level.

Advanced Apprenticeships

Advanced apprenticeships build on the tradition of the apprenticeship. Young people undertaking Advanced Apprenticeships combine training with a job which gives them a sound introduction to the workplace, as well as qualifications which can help you to progress to positions as supervisors and managers. For young people who have completed one or two years in the sixth form or at college Advanced Apprenticeships are an ideal route into a work-based career.

On successful completion, an apprentice will have achieved an NVQ Level 3 Technical Certificate, additional occupational qualifications and Key Skills in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT at an appropriate level.

Advanced National Certificate

This one-year full-time programme enables the development of practical skills to an advanced level. It is attractive to mature students with some experience, who are looking to enhance their employment prospects.

Assessment is via an end of year examination and continuous assessment through written, practical and time constrained assessment.
