PhD Title: An investigation into the affect of hand position and response type upon the allocation of visual attention within three-dimensional space.
Topic: By applying a covert visual cueing paradigm to a three-dimensional display, rather than the traditional two-dimensional display of a computer screen, I have been investigating how covert visual attention is allocated within a depth scene.
Method: Of particular interest is the phenomenon known as the ‘Near-Far Effect’, in which individuals typically respond more quickly to targets appearing closer than expected, than they do when targets appear at locations further beyond those which they had been cued. It is my intention to manipulate the participant’s hand position and the method of response in an effort to eliminate or reverse this phenomenon, thus revealing the mechanisms involved in the allocation of attention in a ‘real-world’ environment.
