Research Interests
I am interested in examining relationships between discourse,
power and the construction of marginalised social identities. I
adopt a qualitative, primarily discursive approach to study the
construction of identity amongst marginalised and minority
social groups. Prior research includes critical discourse
analysis of “new Liberal” talk of immigration, multiculturalism
and the welfare state in the U.K, and analysis of contemporary
constructions of the Holocaust in U.K. society.
Current Research
My PhD research examines the social construction of terrorism
within multiple genres of contemporary Western discourse. Using
a Critical Discourse Analysis approach, I examine terrorism
amongst the genres of psychology, media and lay discourse. My
analysis locates these discourses within a historical, social
and political setting and examines specific discursive
techniques employed in the ensuing construction. The thesis also
investigates pollination of discourse across these seemingly
separate genres.
