Excellence scholarships support bright futures for Lincoln students

First year undergraduates from across the University’s three academic Colleges attended an awards ceremony hosted by Vice Chancellor Professor Mary Stuart where nine Excellence Scholarships and the flagship Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship were presented.
Together, the combined value of these awards totals £18,000, and they are intended to help cover student living costs, including accommodation and study equipment.
The Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship, which was awarded by the University of Lincoln for the first time in 2013, recognises exceptional academic ability and commitment. Worth £9,000 over three years of study, the scholarship rewards an applicant who demonstrates outstanding academic talent, proven commitment to their subject discipline and a personal impact on their community.
It is awarded to a single overall winner from among the recipients of the University of Lincoln’s Excellence Scholarships, which recognise the accomplishments of the highest achieving new undergraduate students joining the institution. Students who attained the greatest total entry qualifications of all new undergraduates within their College earned a scholarship of £1,000.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Professor Mary Stuart said: “The presentation of the Excellence and Vice Chancellor’s Scholarships represents a very special moment for us all here at the University of Lincoln, when we acknowledge the successes of our newest undergraduate students.
“At Lincoln we firmly believe that the experience of higher education is one to be celebrated, and these scholarships provide commendable recipients with the means to continue their learning and reach their full potential. We encourage all of our students to appreciate every opportunity that comes to them during their academic careers, and with the support of these scholarships, we hope that these very talented individuals go forward and continue to act as excellent role models for their peers.”
The nine successful students attended the ceremony on Wednesday 19th February along with family members, teachers from their previous schools and colleges and tutors from the University of Lincoln.
Attendees learned the recipient of the Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship on the day, with Katriona Angel (18) named as the winner of the prestigious award. Katriona, who is originally from Leeds and will now receive a total of £10,000 in scholarship funding, is currently studying on the MComp Computer Information Systems programme at Lincoln.
She said: “I am completely stunned to have received the Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship. It was a great surprise just to hear that I been selected for an Excellence Scholarship, and I had absolutely no idea that I would go on to win such a fantastic award. It will provide great support throughout my studies at Lincoln.”
The Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship and Excellence Scholarships run in addition to other scholarships and bursaries provided by the University of Lincoln. These include the University of Lincoln Scholarship, which supports students from less wealthy backgrounds and is worth up to £3,000 in the first year for eligible students. The University of Lincoln’s numerous support packages are designed to ensure that all students can benefit from higher education, regardless of background or financial circumstance.
