Top economist to discuss prospects for UK recovery
Spencer Dale Chief economist at the Bank of England and member of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee, Spencer Dale, will be the guest speaker at a special economic lunch taking place in Lincoln this week.

The event is being organised by CBI East Midlands and is sponsored by the University of Lincoln. The topic for discussion will be the prospects for the UK economy.

Mr Dale said “I am delighted to be invited to speak at the CBI East Midlands economic lunch and very much look forward to hearing from local business leaders about economic conditions in the region. The information gathered by the Monetary Policy Committee at events like this forms an important input to the setting of monetary policy.”

Having worked for the Bank of England since 1989, Mr Dale was appointed Private Secretary to Mervyn King in 1997, following several years as a senior economist working on a range of monetary policy and financial market issues.  In 2008 he was appointed as the Bank’s Chief Economist and is a member of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee.  He is also responsible for the Monetary Analysis & Statistics Divisions and is recognised as one of the country’s most influential economists.

The event is being hosted by the University of Lincoln’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Ieuan Owen and Professor Val Braybrooks, Dean of the National Centre for Food Manufacturing at Holbeach.  Guests will include senior figures from the food and drink sector.

“I am sure our guests will find his speech particularly insightful given the wealth of experience that Mr Dale brings,” said Lucy Haynes, regional director of CBI East Midlands.  “With the UK outlook relatively flat and the Eurozone crisis still creating uncertainty for our businesses, identifying the challenges and solutions that will kick-start the economy will be critical.”

Andrew Stevenson, Director Research & Enterprise Development at the University of Lincoln, said: “We’re delighted to be able to sponsor this economic lunch with Spencer Dale. As chief economist at the Bank of England, he is better placed than anyone to give an insight into the challenges and opportunities facing businesses as the UK attempts to recover from the global economic downturn.”

The lunch will be followed by a question and answer session with the invited guests and takes place under Chatham House Rules.
