Lincoln students to compete at Olympic Stadium’s inaugural event this weekend
Tag rugby will be among other sports played at the FE/HE Games Plus Lincolnshire’s own games to take place today

Five University of Lincoln students will join more than 1,200 competitors from universities and colleges across the UK in competing at the Olympic stadium this weekend.

They will compete in a variety of events at the BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships (Friday 4 to Monday 7 May) – an event that is being hailed as the first proper test event at the stadium in East London. Normally the Championships are held in Bedford.

The five Lincoln hopefuls are studying on a range of courses at Lincoln, from Sport and Exercise Science to Marketing. They are: Amelia Wood - 100m, Shirleen Timmis - 200m, Claire Stokes - 400m hurdles, Sophie Cowper - 5000m, Andrew Robertson - 3000m and Tom Straw - 1500m.

Director of Sport Robin Wright said: “We are extremely proud of the fact our students are competing at this high profile event and wish them the best of luck.”

Meanwhile, the University is playing host to Lincolnshire’s own universities and colleges games this Friday.

The FE/HE Games are being staged at the University’s sports facilities and will involve hundreds of students from across the county.

Institutions fielding teams include the University, Bishop Grosseteste University College, Stamford College, Lincoln College and Grantham College.

Competitors will be taking part in badminton, mixed netball, tag rugby, seated volleyball and indoor rowing between 10.30am and 3pm. Spectators are welcome to come along and watch.

The event has just won Olympic Inspired Mark status, which officially recognises and rewards exceptional, non-commercial projects inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
