University to host Paralympic athletes ahead of 2012 Games
The Human Performance Centre at the University of Lincoln The University of Lincoln will host Paralympic athletes in the build-up to the London 2012 Games.

The Egyptian Paralympic Committee has confirmed it will be using Pre-Games Training Camps in Lincolnshire for a one-week Performance Camp prior to the 2012 Paralympic Games in August next year.

A 50 person team will reside in Lincoln and use accredited facilities the University’s Human Performance Centre. The athletes will also train at the Princess Royal Sports Arena (PRSA) in Boston, the Meridian Centre in Louth and Yarborough Leisure Centre in Lincoln.

The Egyptian Paralympic Team will arrive in Lincolnshire one week prior to the beginning of the Paralympic Games on 21st August 2012. During their stay, the team will be training for Athletics, Table Tennis, Weight Lifting and Sitting Volleyball.

Robin Wright, Director of Sport at the University of Lincoln, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Lincolnshire, not only to build a sporting international relationship with Egypt, but also to work together in education and research. In conversation with Dr Ashraf Marei we have already discussed scope for collaborations in the future. We feel very proud here at the University of Lincoln to be a partner in bringing Olympic sport to Lincolnshire.”

The University of Lincoln is a member of the Lincolnshire Steering Group for the 2012 Games, which has been working hard to secure a team for the county’s Pre-Games Training Camps over the last 18 months.

The group, which also includes representatives from Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, Lincolnshire County Council, East Lindsey District Council, Boston Borough Council, City of Lincoln Council, Lincolnshire Police, East Midlands Development Agency and CfBT,  hopes that this will be the beginning of a strong relationship with Egypt.

Councillor Doreen Stephenson, Lincolnshire Champion for the 2012 Games, said: “We are delighted to announce that a team from Egypt has said it intends to use sports facilities in Lincolnshire as a base for the 2012 Paralympic Games next year. This is a testament to some of the fantastic sports facilities our county has to offer.”
