Fashion showcase hits runway ahead of Graduate Fashion Week
fashion 2010 Final year Fashion students from the University are putting the final touches to their runway shows this week ahead of the big reveal at this year’s fashion show on Friday 20 May.

Coming into Fashion is the culmination of three years' hard work and dedication by students on the BA (Hons) Fashion Studies course and will showcase their final collections before heading off to exhibit at Graduate Fashion Week.

International fashion designer Antonio Berardi, creator of the heel-less shoes worn by celebrities including Victoria Beckham, launched the first fashion show to be held at the Engine Shed in 2008. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts by the University in 2007.

Collections this year include: Nouveau Row - taking inspiration from Art Nouveau and Savile Row, to include modern trousers, shirts and jackets that are ready-to-wear rather than tailored, whilst balancing feminine shapes with masculine colours and materials; Tokyo Heights -  draws inspiration from the designer’s Japanese relative – think fans sewn into clothing and teal green with shots of pink.

Fellow final year student Niki Akrivou describes her collection as ‘designing from the shapes of the sea’.  A lot of her own designs have been taken from experimenting with paints and oils to create patterns that reflect the colours of the sea.

Lincoln’s Fashion students have enjoyed growing recognition in a number of national competitions such as the Fashion Awareness Direct Competition, Bridal Buyers Award and the British Glove Association Design Awards. They will be exhibiting for the first time at the prestigious Graduate Fashion Week in London in June - the top forum to showcase the very best BA Graduate fashion design talent in the UK.

Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Fashion Studies course, Maria Manning, said: “The fashion shows are hugely exciting for everyone involved and provide students with the real experience of presenting their work in a public arena.

“We provide students with the skills they need for an exciting and successful career within their chosen area of the fashion industry. The experienced team of staff have worked at every level of the market, covering product areas that range from tailoring, casual wear and knitwear, to millinery, styling, fashion forecasting and fashion journalism.”

Sponsors of this year’s event include; David Nieper, Clarins, Boots, Debenhams, BrandFour Design Agency, Retford Academy, Access to Music, Kim Oakley (choreographer), TRB Marquees, The Hub.

Two shows will run on Fri 20th May at the Engine Shed, Brayford Pool, Lincoln. Tickets for the 1pm show cost £5.00 (doors open 12.30pm) and £10.00 for the 7pm show.
