Find out about new courses for budding gardeners
Student tending flowers The University of Lincoln’s Riseholme College is hosting an open event on Wednesday 2 September, giving people the opportunity to find out about part-time courses in gardening which start this autumn.

The City & Guilds General Certificate in Gardening is a 32 week course (one day per week) for people with a general interest in gardening who wish to develop their skills.  People can also opt to complete just one or two modules on this course, which include garden design and practical skills.

The popular Royal Horticultural Society General Certificate in Horticulture is also returning as an alternative option for those who wish to study towards a gardening qualification in the evening.

With the trend to grow your own fruit and vegetables on the increase and National Allotments Week taking place this week, there is no better time for green-fingered gardening enthusiasts to learn more about the benefits of pinching out and deadheading, the difference between annuals and perennials, or simply how to plan, plant and propagate a herbaceous border in the garden.

Erica Leighton recently completed the RHS General Certificate in Horticulture and collected a prize for the top student on the course at Riseholme’s annual Prize Day at the Epic Centre.

She said: “I’ve always liked gardening and thought I was quite good at it, but I wanted to enhance my knowledge. The course gives you an understanding of what happens when things grow – for example, you don’t feed plants, you enrich their soil.

“Even now I’ve finished the course, I’m still constantly learning because I understand more about why things happen, and now people keep coming to me asking for advice on their own gardens.  I would definitely recommend the course, even to those who are good at gardening.  It’s a great opportunity to meet others who enjoy it - people of all ages – and Riseholme is a lovely place to study.”

Riseholme College is hosting the open event on Wednesday 2 September 2009 between 2pm and 7.30pm for anyone interested in part-time gardening courses.  There will be the opportunity to speak to tutors to find out more about each course and separate modules.
