Young cello star’s tribute to a Russian maestro
Guy Johnston One of Britain’s finest young classical music stars will pay tribute to the great Russian cellist Mistislav Rostropovich in a concert at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre.

Former BBC Young Musician of the Year Guy Johnston (cello) will take to the stage at the University of Lincoln venue alongside an illustrious line-up of international musicians and competition winners.

The concert, A Mistislav Rostropovich Tribute, is part of the LPAC’s International Concert Series 2009 and will take place on Sunday 24 May.

The programme includes music by Rostropovich’s long-time friend and collaborator, Benjamin Britten, which was specially written for the Russian maestro.

There are also two wonderful Russian romantic masterpieces and an unusual quartet for violin, viola and two cellos by Arensky, the teacher of Tchaikovsky. The programme ends with a string sextet masterpiece by Tchaikovsky, the leader of Russian composers and master of melody.

Guy Johnston has become a fast-rising star on the international concert stage after making an extraordinary debut in London at the BBC Proms where he played the Elgar Cello Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin. Since then, he has enjoyed a number of successes with the London Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony, Orchester der Hessischer Rundfunk, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Osaka Philharmonic, St.Petersburg Academic Symphony, Gavle Symphony, Lithuanian National Philharmonic and regular tours to Japan. Conductors he works closely with include Yan Pascal Tortelier, Daniele Gatti, Leonard Slatkin, Robin Ticciati and Alan Burbayev.

Graham Oppenheimer, Artistic Director for the International Concert Series, said: "The programme is a tribute to the Late Mistislav Rostropovich, or ‘Slava’, the great Russian cellist and outstanding musical figure. He was internationally respected as performer, ambassador and conductor.”

Guy Johnston will perform A Mistislav Rostropovich Tribute at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre on Sunday 24 May. The concert starts at 4pm and there is a pre-concert talk at 3.15pm.

Tickets cost £12 (£10 concessions, £5 students) and are available from 0844 888 4414, www.lpac.co.uk or the Engine Shed and LPAC Box Office, which is open Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm.
