Professor’s medal wins place in British Museum
Professor’s medal wins place in British Museum A silver medal designed by a University of Lincoln academic has been purchased by the British Museum.

The piece by Professor Norman Cherry is made from standard silver and carries the title We Have Guided Missiles And Misguided Men. This quotation is taken from Martin Luther King’s 1963 book, Strength to Love.

The medal, which has been included in the contemporary medals collection at the British Museum, is one of four which Prof Cherry designed and made for the Anti-War Medals exhibition, curated by the Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco. This show toured extensively in the USA and Europe between 2003 and 2006. Two other medals were sold to a private American collector.

Prof Cherry, Dean of the School of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of Lincoln, said: “Unlike many friends and acquaintances, I didn’t take part in any antiwar marches, but I did at a later stage decide to create these medals for the touring exhibition, which was a way of making my own comment in a more tangible and longer-lasting form. Of course, I’m delighted that one of them has been included in such a prestigious public collection.”
