Bright futures ahead for young furniture designers
Limahl Asmall's Nest Table Young furniture designers recently graduated from the University of Lincoln are already forging bright careers for themselves after winning prestigious industry awards.

Limahl Asmall and Amy Vinn collected honours in Cabinet Maker magazine’s Young Designer of the Year Awards 2009.

It means University of Lincoln graduates picked up two of the four awards at this important national showcase out of more than 100 entrants from around the country.

Limahl (24), originally from East Sussex, and Amy (25), from Cambridgeshire, both studied BA (Hons) Furniture in the University’s Lincoln School of Art & Design.

Limahl’s unique Nest Table won the award in the furniture category, while Amy’s distinctive Allsorts seats and table – a playful take on the classic sweets – won the soft furnishings section.

It was the third year running a University of Lincoln graduate has won the furniture category.

Amy, whose colourful confectionary-inspired design has been featured in the national press, is currently on a three month internship with a prestigious furniture maker in Italy.

Limahl, who will undertake a placement with a top British company as part of his prize, is in talks with some big name high street retailers about supplying his Nest Table on a commercial scale.

He has already sold several pieces through exhibitions and his website, www.limahlfurniture.com.

Limahl said: “I knew that the Nest Table was commercially viable if I could get the costs down and find a quicker way to make it. I spent a lot of last summer working out different ways to streamline the production process. I’ve had some success with my other pieces, but there is something about the Nest Table that draws people in. I think the most appealing aspect is that it’s never been done before - it’s unique.”
