Australian String Quartet to launch new season


Australian String QuartetThe Lincoln Academy at the University of Lincoln launches a new season of international classical concerts this weekend with a performance by the celebrated Australian String Quartet.


The outstanding prize-winning Adelaide-based quartet, which has had a major impact on the musical life of Australia, will perform the first of the new International Concert Series at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre at Brayford Pool on Sunday afternoon (21st September).


On the programme will be Sculthorpe String Quartet no 8, Debussy String Quartet op 10 and Dvořk Piano Quintet in A major op 81, with Piers Lane accompanying on the piano.


The Australian String Quartet was established in 1985 and is Quartet in Residence at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at The University of Adelaide.


The current membership of Sophie Rowell and Anne Horton (violins), Sally Boud (viola) and Rachel Johnston (cello) was established in 2006 and the quartet tours both nationally and internationally.


The Australian String Quartet is the only Australian ensemble to have participated in the prestigious chamber music class of the Alban Berg Quartet at the Cologne Hochschule fr Musik and also holds the distinction of having won more international chamber music competitions than any other ensemble in Australian history.


The group has performed in many major European cities including Hamburg, Berlin, Paris, London, Copenhagen, Cologne, Belgrade, Budapest, Zagreb and Frankfurt and throughout Australia, Germany, New Zealand and Japan. It was selected to perform the celebratory concerts for the Danish royal wedding in May 2004.


The concert on Sunday 21st September begins at 3.45pm and will be preceded by an informal talk at 3:15pm.

The International Concert Series hosted by the Lincoln Academy at the University of Lincoln is a long-standing series of concerts with the number of concerts increasing to 12 across the year.


The Lincoln Academy is the collective name given to the cultural outreach activities of the University of Lincoln and features public lectures and classical concerts.
