Lincoln student steals the show at MTV

A Media Technology student from the University of Lincoln became the unlikely star of a live MTV music show in New York.

Robbie Lawson was on a field trip to the Big Apple when he was plucked out of the audience to become MTV’s first Fan of the Day on the TRL show.

Robbie, from Hull, took the microphone and confidently hosted a segment of the show. In his 30 seconds of fame he managed to name-check his tutor John Hamlin and the University of Lincoln to more than seven million viewers across the United States.

The show’s producer liked him so much Robbie was invited back the next day to present a highlights show.

“It was the most amazing experience ever,” said Robbie, who graduates this summer. “Afterwards people were asking for my autograph and wanted to have their photograph taken with me.”

The visit to New York was one of a series by the Department of Computing & Informatics. Alongside the visit to MTV, the students also visited leading games, film and new media producers to get an insight to the operational structure of these companies. Some students are now looking to follow-up offers made of summer placements and work opportunities.

Tutor John Hamlin said: “Visiting MTV and participating in their most popular live show was one of the highlights of the visit to New York. I had planned the visit to provide students with an opportunity to see how a live television programme is structured and organised.  It was a big surprise was when Rob was picked out and I’m sure he won’t forget it.”
