Design auctioned off at University of Lincoln

Graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook, known for his design work for Adbusters magazine, album cover artwork for David Bowie, and a recent exhibition at the London Design Museum, will be the guest auctioneer for the University of Lincoln’s first Design Auction.

More than 80 world wide design consultancies are participating by donating their artwork to the auction. The event has been organised by University of Lincoln Graphic Design students, supported by the School of Art and Design. This is a significant cultural event for Lincoln that has been recognised by the creative design industry globally.

Participating design consultancies include: NB Studio, Why Not Associates, GF Smith, Paula Scher Milton Glaser, Ian Anderson, Mark Studio, The Chase, Jeremy Tankard, Turner Duckworth and work placements at Sea Design and Dowling Design & Art Direction.

More than 100 lots will be on sale, including an out-of-print edition of David Hillman’s Nova book, a poster by Michael Johnson depicting the steps of how to get a design job after university, and album covers by Stefan Sagmeister who has designed artwork for the Rolling Stones and David Byrne.

The identity for the event was developed by third year students Matt Mellor, Faye Morrow and Liam Mitchell with Dowling Design & Art Direction.

Matt said: “The Design Auction is an opportunity to draw together the biggest names in design, photography and illustration, giving everyone an opportunity to purchase a piece of iconic artwork. The number of lots expanded from 40 to 120 in one week, with the team members competing to see who could get the most exciting donation The competitive aspect of the campaign has proved very popular amongst the contributors in the design industry, and they have been fantastically supportive.”

Graphic Design Lecturer John Dowling said: “The event is about getting graduates a foot in the design door and raising awareness of the course at Lincoln.”

The auction will take place at the University’s Brayford Pool Campus in the Jackson Lecture Theatre on 9 April from 2pm onwards. Seats for the auction need to be booked by emailing bid@designauction.co.uk

Bids are being accepted on-line, by telephone in advance, and at the event.
