Conference brought to the UK by Lincoln student

A determined Journalism student has secured the 2009 Annual Conference for the Forum for European Journalism Students (FEJS) to take place in Lincoln.

The conference has never been held in the UK before and University of Lincoln student Gina Davies is the first person to represent the UK.

To secure the conference Gina went to Trieste in Italy along with 20 representatives from other European countries to attend the FEJS general assembly. It was there that Gina gave a presentation about Lincoln and the University and Lincoln was unanimously chosen as the destination for the 2009 Annual Conference.

“Securing the FEJS conference was a wild dream for me. I had been to a few European events in Brussels and Macedonia previously and although it was an experience, I thought Lincoln could do some things a lot better. I just wanted to show it off,” said Gina.

“It was my tutor, Debbie Wilson, who first drew my attention to the possibilities of exploring European countries through Journalism. She got me involved in the European Youth Media Days event in Brussels which was an amazing experience. She also supported my application to go to Macedonia to represent Siren FM, the University of Lincoln’s community radio station, on a training course.

“I know it’s going to be a big job organising a conference for 120 people but it is something I can’t wait to get my teeth stuck in to.”

Around 20 students studying Media-related courses at Lincoln will have the opportunity to help Gina run the event; five of whom will have the chance to attend the next FEJS Annual Conference in Zagreb, Croatia, next April.

Gina is currently taking a year out from studying Journalism to take up the post of Communications Officer for the Students’ Union (SU), she is also Head of News at Siren FM. Gina will return to complete her final year next September and she then hopes to go on to do an MA in Journalism at the University of Lincoln.
