HONOUR FOR CHICAGO ART EXPERT

 

The President of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is to receive an honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Lincoln next week.

 

Professor Tony Jones CBE is an internationally known broadcaster, writer and historian of art and design who is also President and Co-CEO of the distinguished art school.

 

Professor Jones was born in 1944 and studied at the University of London, Newport College of Art and Tulane University, New Orleans as a Fulbright Scholar to the United States.

 

He trained as an artist and has subsequently dedicated his life to the service of artists, designers and architects across first Europe and then North America.

He is a recognised authority on the development of art, design and architecture in the modern age, especially on the work of the architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Vienna Werkstätte, the Celtic Revival and the designer Archibald Knox.

He is the leading authority on the history, culture and architecture of chapels in Wales; his first book was published when he was 17 and he has published subsequent books and exhibitions on Welsh chapel architecture in 1985, 1993 and 1996. 

 

He is a former Director of both the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art and was made a Commander of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen in 2003.

 

The Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of Lincoln has close connections with Chicago and collaborative scholarship between the two institutions has fostered growing research and distinctive academic development.

 

Professor Jones will receive an honorary Doctorate of Arts during the University of Lincoln graduation ceremony beginning at 7.30pm on Monday 11th September at Lincoln Cathedral.
